jrit
I "ran" a good loop around Jefferson in the spirit of Mts Hood, St Helens, and Adams, which have standard loops. I did this in trail running shoes and no special gear, but the East side feels very mountaineerish below Whitewater. My sense from the total lack of cairns, bivy sites, etc. over there is that nobody really goes over there, but it is a great route that I think deserves some use from other trail runner types. Main trip report is at https://medium.com/@jrit/mt-jefferson-high-loop-9c441b1ec586 Or if you just want to skip to caltopo for a track https://caltopo.com/m/MTC9T 1
bedellympian
FYI --- No one goes over there because it is a reservation for the Confederated Warm Springs Tribes and you need permission to do so.
Reid Kerr
I just did Loowit and Timberline this summer and wondered if a Jeff circumnav would be possible. Nicely done! Someone mentioned the tribe. I don’t think it’s especially difficult to get permission. Hopefully people who do this trek and are aware of this rule follow it. I suggest everyone follows tribal regulations. As far as I understand things from the Warm Springs website, I acted in accordance with their regulations at the time. That is of course subject to change, and it is possible even at the time I misunderstood regulations.
JasonG
Good for you @jrit, all you can do is try, and that is more than most do. I've worked for a Tribe for the past 23+ years and I still get surprised when tribal regulations change!
Alisse
Did you stop to swim in any of the lakes, though? (I assume there are at least a few tarns?) Edited October 13, 2023 by Alisse
