Haha, will do! Thanks again for our insight. I need to get my Hood TR put up from last June. Absolutely nothing special, typical slog route, but there was a pro photog around shooting the Reach the Summit group and he took some incredible night shots.

The changes I was thinking of would be something more along the lines of wanting to do Gib Ledges, seeing it's out of condition when recon-ing above Muir, then deciding to do Ingrahm Dir. instead. But, like you said, chances are there would be a ranger at Muir to speak with.

Thanks again, guys! I appreciate the help and first hand knowledge. Kautz or FF would be preferable for me, but we shall see when the time comes. WRT the permits, you indicate route and days out etc... What if you change your mind? Are there places for alternate routes, or am I over thinking it?

Probably late season trip reports... those make it look a bit icy. I just need to relax and realize that I don't have to decide today on which routes will be in shape 100 days from now. Flatlander gets a little excited when I start thinking about trips to higher places.
-
Minimizing crevasse danger is always a plus, but I think Kautz may be pushing it a bit. Neither of us have 2nd tools, and while I'd love to get to that point, I'm not sure about a multi-belay steepish snow/ice route for my first try. Sounds like a recipe for slow going. I've also always had a thing for the Fuhrer Finger for some odd reason. Decisions decisions... As a few of you have alluded to, I'll just have to keep an eye on conditions and try to be as prepared as possible for what the mountain has available for us at that time!

Dredging this one back up.... since this year is looking to be a lower snowfall year so far; (full well knowing it could nuke in spring) do you all think Gib ledges would still be in in late May? From what I've gathered, it seems to go out of shape pretty early in the season in normal snow years. I'd love to tick something non-cattle, but I don't want to push it on my first crack at Rainer.

They found him dead today in a snow bank. Appears he froze to death! The mountain did good today! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45850791/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/t/iraq-vet-sought-killing-rainier-ranger-found-dead/from/toolbar

Bump for the weekend...
-
Probably larges since I'll need them to fit over other layers.

Prices dropped on the vests Asking prices are OBO, lemme know what you're thinkin! Looking to clear up some closet space and make way for new stuff for a Rainier trip this summer. Sorry for the cell phone pics, please let me know if you need any better photos. Arcteryx Fission SL - Woman's Large. I bought this from RafalA (member here) earlier this year, but it's just too small for me. Tried it on in the house a few times, it's in great shape. Paid $400 shipped, would like to recoup costs. Mountain Hardwear Subzero Jacket - Medium, Olive. I've had this for a while, but don't wear it much. Still in great shape! 650 fill, I think these can be found online for ~$130. $80 shipped. Mountain Hardwear Subzero Vest - Medium, Red. I bought this at the same time as the Jacket, it's been worn even less than the jacket. 650 fill, $50 shipped. Mountain Hardwear Windstopper Vest - Large, Red. Bought this about the same time as the other two, worn maybe 10 times. It does have a small cigarette burn on the outer fleece on the stomach, doesn't effect performance at all. $30 shipped. If anyone is interested in any trades, I'm looking for a good lightweight shell jacket, and a good hooded down jacket. Thanks, and please let me know if you have any questions. Ted

I have a Metolius Pureforce that I don't use anymore. It's the narrower version, white, yellow and black color. I can shoot you some pics tonight if you'd like.

Thanks guys! I think we'll start looking at Ingrahm/Gib Ledges/DC and learn all we can from here on about the routes/landmarks. Commiting to a Muir climb helps narrow things down considerably. Hoping to make it a 6 day trip or so to maximize weather opportunities. Any thoughts on whether it is better to try to get a spot in the hut or maybe try to camp a bit higher? (Beehive or Ingrahm Flats depending on the route)
-
Fark... you're probably right on that one. Maybe I'll do Hood again if that's the case. He hasn't done it yet. Do you have guesstimates at temp ranges? Trying to figure out what sleeping bag to bring.
-
Good idea on the "chase". Something from Muir is pretty much a given with the bump up in dates. I was hoping to take a full week off of work to gain us some flexibility. If nothing else, I'd like to also get some other Cascade summits, and St. Helens and Adams aren't too far...

second winter ascent [TR] Mt Huntington - Nettle-Quirk 3/19/2011
Theodore replied to John Frieh's topic in Alaska
That traverse pic is magazine worthy! Congrats! -
Sorry for the basic ?, what are typical conditions on Rainier like in mid/late May? Obviously it will change from year to year due to weather. I'm guessing still pretty cold and lower crevasse fall risk, sound about right? Most likely sticking to one of the more basic/well travelled routes for our first try at the mountain. I was planning on a trip later in the summer, but my climbing partner was just accepted to a nurse anesthetist program and needs to have our "big" annual trip done by 5/31. Thanks for any help!

Be sure to keep an eye on the yard sale section here. There are some great deals to be found if you don't have to have the latest and greatest stuff!

Zero affiliation, just thought it would help. http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/gearclass.php?entry=1326&start=25&cpgm=gearmain

Sorry, had a close friends wedding this weekend that I helped with. Hoping to get my ducks in order today, should hopefully have things squared by tonight. I understand, either way a sale is a sale, do what you need to do!

Sounds about perfect to me. We're pretty close chest and waist wise. I'm wanting a jacket like this for breaks and a camp jacket. My MH Subzero doesn't have a hood and was just too bulky on Mt Hood earlier this year. I don't think the sizing is going to work for the Theta. She's closer to a large, especially for a piece that will go on over other stuff. Could you still do $350 for the Fission? Also, since you're north of the border and I'm south of it, how would you want to work out payment?
-
I'm thinking about the Fission for myself and the Theta for her. I'm slowly getting her squared away with gear, she's liking 14ers in CO more, so this will be a nice thing for her to have. All the stuff I'm finding on the Fission is saying that it's unisex. I'm 5'7" and 175, think it would fit ok? If it's as burly as the reviews say, I don't think I'd need much more than a solid baselayer under it for most winter CO trips.
