Whopping 2" here. Good thing they canceled school. When I was a kid, we had to walk to school in a blizzard of 3' of pow, uphill, both ways...

I'm having trouble deciding which lycra pants to wear under my shorts. Hmmm, the pink ones or neon green?

I used a down one like that (a few years older) on a 35 day trip in the AK Range and froze my ass off, even with puffy coat, heavy fleece(s), poly pro liner, bivy sack, down booties, and all the poly pro layers I had (light, med & heavy) in an exp tent. However, we saw temps in the -40 to -50F below zero (April). My buddy had a Marmot CWM -40 and was comfy the whole trip. I'd add +20 to the rating for "comfort". You would likely survive at it's rated temp. Also, if it has been used a lot or not stored properly over the last decade, it could well have a lot less loft, especially if it is down...

lol I climbed off my couch, approached my fridge and on-sighted the bottle cap. I pushed a new route around the far side of my kitchen table, with some mandatory aid moves when I had to grab my sleeping dog's collar to move him out of the way. My five year old did her first free solo on her bike yesterday (no more training wheels). Now that's exciting!

Congrats dude!

It was probably a tough bird anyhow. If you'd eaten it it would have taken 10 years of chewing to soften. One of my earliest memories was Pops taking me to some sheep farm. As they herded the sheep into this maze, corral thing, I felt really sorry for one poor little guy that had a bloody nose. All the sheep looked very upset and knew the gig was up. Soon enough, the poor little guy with the bloody nose, took a 44 slug and ended up in the freezer, along with a few others. I will never forget that day. Yet, I don't recall thinking about that when I was later eating the poor guy. I no longer hunt, but did when I was growing up and we were always taught to be respectful and grateful for any bounty. It's just part of life. It's a dog eat dog world. We are just lucky enough to live in a time & place that offers a lot of choices that other generations did not even dream of. We can go off on a whole other tangent about the evils of the mega food corporations and meat industries, but that should be another thread of it's own.

I agree, especially on point 2. I've always found it curious that some humans are the only species that considers this. I doubt Smokey the Bear, or any other animals is like "oh, I don't want to hurt the poor little guy"... Just seems odd. But hey, whatever floats yer boat. Just please don't lecture me about my juicy grass fed, hormone free steak... To each his own. As far as Vegan, Raw, Atkins, whatever, the proof is in da pudding. I can honestly say that my lovely wife has gotten much more lovely since she went to a diet of mostly unprocessed foods. Her skin has a nicer glow, she has lost some weight and a lot of her friends and coworkers have noticed "she just looks healthier". She has always been very active/fit and the only change is trying to eat at least 60% unprocessed/organic foods. Your results may vary. The key is finding the right balance that works for you. So far, I'm leaning out incredible fast since I cut out the sugar/carbs for a month or two on my docs recommendation. The first week was a real bitch, but I think I'm over the hump now. I have a lot more energy but I can't seem to get full, no matter how much protein and veggies I eat. I'm counting the days till I can have a bowl of ice cream and some cookies. Maybe even a beer or three. whoo hoo.

I also had a teacher in high school that accidentally backed over a little kid while backing out of his driveway. The kid was killed. Again, a terrible, horrible accident. I guess we need to ban cars too. If cars were banned, the kid would not have been killed. The teacher did do a year or so in jail and would sometimes bring the subject up in class and use it a lesson...

When I was in high school, a couple buddies of mine were cleaning their guns and one of them went to grab the gun, which had a hair trigger. When he pulled the gun across the bed by the end of the barrel, it went off and killed him. A very tragic thing to happen to a kid, but it was user error that caused it. NEVER PLAY WITH LOADED GUNS. NEVER POINT A GUN AT SOMETHING UNLESS YOU INTEND TO SHOOT IT. ALWAYS ASSUME ANY GUN IS LOADED AND TREAT IT THAT WAY. Etc, etc, etc... Twas not the guns fault.

Not looking too promising here either, Rob...

So here is an example that happened in my own family. My Dad was stationed in Alaska when he was in Air Force. He always carried his 44 Mag when he went out in the bush fishing, for bear protection. He never needed it for that. However, he usually kept it in the old Volvo wagon, with the holster belt strapped around the steering column. One day, the family is driving on one of the long, open, and mostly vacant highways when a couple thugs tried running them off the road. I'd guess they were trying to car jack the fam. Pops got the 44 mag about half-way out of the holsters and the would be assailants decided to get the hell out of Dodge. I often wonder how that would have turned out if he was unarmed? That story is the folk lore of legend in our family. Along with when my Dad was a kid, he hated limberger cheese, so when Grandma brought a bunch home, he hid it. Some time later, they could not find where the horrible smell was coming from. Turns out, he hid it behind the radiator. But I digress...

What kind of guns are acceptable tools? Are nuclear weapons acceptable tools? Tanks and heavy machine guns? "Assault rifles?" High-capacity magazines? What is acceptable for personal defense, and what should be prohibited to protect the masses? Where do YOU draw the line? If you like to harvest your own food guns are an excellent "tool". I'm not a hunter anymore, but when I did, I ate what I shot. Shooting an intruder that intends to rape your wife and kill your kids would be another example when a weapon is also a "tool". "Never bring a knife to a gun fight." Not sure where the line should be drawn, but our society is way past having no guns. As it is, the criminals have plenty, so the good guys should have them too. We cannot undo this reality. If I ever were to buy any more guns, I'd get one that has the computer chip in it and only works in my hand. Never seen one, but I'd guess they are still on the market. Again, I guess we should ban cars too... Look how many people get killed by drunk driver's. It's all the cars fault.

Better to have a gun (and know how to use it) and not need it than be dead because you did not. Could be a gun, knife, whatever. Banning them does not stop people from dying from them. Guns are like any other "tool". Yes, they should be regulated, perhaps more than they are in most states.

Guess I'm not as good a parent as I thought... I read the label on the milk and it is "flash pasteurized". Sure tastes a hell of a lot better than the stuff from slaveway. Not a placebo effect whatsoever. More like the difference between eating fruit that has been on a ship from somewhere overseas, vs the taste of one picked fresh from the tree/vine. Whatever, go ahead and eat crap if you want, I prefer it as fresh as possible.
