Here's a fine example of such a group doing just that. It's been working on women's rights in Afghanistan for near 30 years. It's also been undermined and marginalized by "liberty's crusaders" since day one of the US occupation. One can certainly be opposed to Marxists or any other group supporting racial and gender equality. What goes on around here though is continual slandering of people raising human rights issues, civil rights issues, gender and racial issues as commies, feminazis, etc. unless, of course, we're speaking about Islam. This double standard would seem suggest those people were more interested in providing ideological cover for their political and racial beliefs than genuine concern for human rights, etc.

Or something a bit stronger...

Yep. That vindicates the Christians then. "Move along, nothing to see here...move along."

My point is who they fuck are "they", why are their ideas so potent now, and don't for a second believe the wielders of deadly force have your interests in mind whatever justifications they may use.

Oh, by all means then I’d be happy to join in the CC.com Victorian Ladies Sewing Circle circle-jerk. “Oooh, aren’t they just so savage! Oh yes quite! So barbaric their religious rituals, when will they simply grow up? Sorry dear, I just don’t think they’re quite up for it.” What’s the point? Or are you suggesting that the major actors (the US government) are doing something about it and should be supported? As usual, the most vehement defenders of women’s liberty on this board in the Islamic context are also those most likely to denounce as kooks, commies, and parlor Marxists those raising the issues of racial and gender equality, violence against women and human rights in other contexts. While I don’t know that one must condemn and criticize everything in order to criticize and condemn one thing, some consistency on this point would lead one to believe that those people were something more than hypocritical opportunists. Sure. I would stress that my point here is to try and understand that history and why such ideas or any idea becomes popular, gains adherents, and becomes important at that particular time. Yes, there are militant teachings in the Koran just as there are in the Bible. Why are those particular aspects so powerful at this historical juncture? How has the context changed that gives such ideas new life? The same questions can be asked with regard to American fundamentalism, ethnic violence in Kenya, or riots in suburban Paris. Why now? Simply stating that it’s religious extremism or that “these people have been killing themselves for thousands of years”, or “it’s Islam” or were in a “clash of civilizations” is simply neither historically accurate or particularly helpful understanding social change or in solving problems. Metaphysical and faith-based interpretations of current events like these need to be rejected by thoughtful people.

Human societies and their history are not bees. Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney, et al. might wish they had considered this fact in 2002.

is bigoted nonsense, and inconsistent with your subsequent statements See my last post on the bottom of the first page of this thread. That statement was made in haste, and I thought it was harsh at the time I wrote it, and I later retracted its implied inclusivity. However, I will not retract any statement I've made previously that fundamentalists and/or extremists get a free pass from me to exhibit intolerance and violent over-reactions, to include stonings to death and pre-meditated murder. Now, to your next topic... They can look anywhere they damn well please where people are engaging in peaceful public discourse of divergent ideas. That is how truly enlightened populations work out their differences. Fine. Thanks for the clarification. We are in some agreement on religious extremism. What is at issue is the essentializing of an entire religious group based on the actions of a few who were until very recently, marginal actors. Despite claims that violent extremism is "hardwired" into Islam, the rise of al-Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, and figures like Sayyid Qutb, al-Zawahiri, and bin Laden are well documented and understood. Militant political Islam is an historical phenomenon, not a metaphysical one. Secondly, I've a problem with the implicit assumption that the developmentally retarded "muslim world" need only look to Western civilization to solve its problems. Again, this view overlooks the very real and lengthy historical relationship between Muslim and Arab populations and "the West". Further, it whitewashes the deeply disfunctional economic and political realities were facing right now. I reject the moral pretense used to justify blatant aggression if only because these very same people waging the wars are opposed to even paying lip service to racial/gender equality and human rights in any other context except the muslim one.

What's your point, Kojak?
-
Sobo, You're the one that suggested that the Muslim World take a look around at the rest of the world and evolve or become enlightened. Where should "they" look? Furthermore, this, is bigoted nonsense, and inconsistent with your subsequent statements

Closer to 40 for the committed or incarcerated part. Don't forget assassinated abortion doctors either. Anyway, which part of the world were you talking about? Kenya, Chad, Timor, Colombia, Russia, India, Louisiana, Mexico? All embroiled in some form of religious/racial/ethnic/gender violence totally unrelated to the historic rise of militant political Islam. Your idiotic essentializing of Islam is an ideological leftover from a debunked and failed foreign policy initiative. Get a context.
-
Exactly how far back would we need to go in American history for this statement to get you burned alive, incarcerated, or committed? How many years?

HOPE?! I'll give you hope, godammit!

More contempt for working people by working-class people. Now that we're on the topic FW, maybe you could give Marylou a ride to the polls in your Pepsi (oops, Coke) truck.
-
Did you learn that while you were with the Marines?
-
Be careful not to hurt any babies on your way in to reenlist. I heard that leftists sometimes use them as human-shields.
-
Did somebody say gay Christian porn?

Again, 1985 was a while back, but I think you could bring some Philly cops out of retirement for that one.
-
well they won't know their politics unless that information is gathered and tabulated by homeland security. maybe we can have some sort of national id barcode tattoo system to determine proper firefighter coverage based on if you paid for your firefighter coverage or not. Just put it on your Facebook account.
-
Maybe they could use Philadelphia as an example...

Here's an idea: Set up Euthanasia Clinics. Put a bunch of lefties in front to block the door. The skinheads will push their way through under the pretense of protecting freedom and be euthanized inside.
-
I'm sure there are some Bay-Area skinheads around that would stand for our freedoms in this case. I'll check the Ron Paul website!
-
Yeah, those malnourished little skinheads will never make the cut.
-
Wow, those skinheads really, really wanted to get in there!
-
Yep. That's why I'll be voting for Angry White Man Ron Paul! He's got the anti-vaccine vote all locked up, I hear. "You must be inoculated with the blood of Jesus Christ!"
