Trip: Whitehorse - Niederprum/Northwest Date: 5/26/2007 Trip Report: The snow was very soft but not tooo sloppy. We left the car at 7am. The trail has some blowdown of course but is generally in good shape to the snowline. It pays to try to stick to the trail in the timber on the right near snowline rather than head up the snow-and-devils-club-gully. The weather was good except for fog above high pass, near where we passed a group of 11 mountaineers. The moat just below the summit is still passable on the left side. We roped up to cross it, but didn't really need to. We shared the summit with all of the mountaineers at about 1:30, and returned to the car by 6. All in all a great day out on a magnificent mountain. Gear Notes: Ice axe, rope. Brought crampons but didn't need 'em.

Perhaps this is the story he meant to post, at Stairway to Heaven http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=847134 http://kutv.com/topstories/local_story_030140824.html

Someone mix up her email and take her dang phone numbers down, poor girl doesn't know any better.

IMO, if you can afford it, go for the Vista, though the Legend probably won't let you down either. the compass alone is worth the extra (though I do still bring an addl). Its a time savings issue... with the Vista, I'm able to stop, glance down, look at the map, and just keep going, no fussing with holding it out in the direction of travel etc. The Vista Cx I'm using lasts a whole day out on two cheap AAs. The best thing about these new units though is the color maps, so easy to read!

I haven't seen a real good bump line in years. Snowboarders.

Ok, this is exactly what I was hoping to hear. Now I can dispense with all that diamond-bit-drill-press rubbish. You guys are full of good information despite what anyone might say. Any guesses about how many bits I will need to get the job done? I will look for a drill this week, I don't need a cordless so the rental shops are bound to have one. I almost want to do it by hand, as SG said, there would be the truly "handmade" factor and I'd get to see what things are like for the purists. Anyone in Spokane want to loan me their hand-drill handle? :) ...but I have a pretty good idea now that motivation will last about one or two days, and I'll be looking for a drill. Thanks a bunch all!

I was wondering when someone would ask... its actually for some artwork, I'm drilling the holes in granite cobbles. I've been told to use diamond bits on a press, but couldn't figure out why I would do that when climbers put holes in rock without all that expense all the time. So, I was hoping someone would shed some light for me, see what I'm up against. Nice trip up the Lochsa, by the way kurt.

rumr are you saying hand drilling in granite is bad or just laborious? How much can I expect to pay to rent, and what will my time savings be? Any hints for me or problems I might encounter?
-
I have at least 20 to do, trying to determine the best method.
-
Here's one that ought to get everyone's undies bundled. I've never bolted before. Does anyone hand drill anymore? About how long would it take to hand drill a 1/2"x5" hole in good granite? No, I'm not going to Dishman Rocks in Spokane.

So glad you are safe now!!!! Was the whoomping sound similar to what you have heard before? I've heard it and it creeps me out every time, luckily I've been on safe terrain or already very weary of the danger when I've heard it. Do you think the noise was actually the slab failing, but it didn't move until a moment later?
-
So, did you go up there with the board? How was it?

All Honesty Here...Large and in charge....Hood?
Kit replied to mountainxclimb's topic in Climber's Board
Pay for volunteers? Huh? The single best thing you could do to increase your margin of safety is to find someone with some experience to go with you. Is this a new year's resolution? Good luck and congrats on your continuing recovery! -
Cellphones still work in the mountains. Your particular phone might not. If you hope to use you phone in rural areas, insist on getting a TRI-MODE. Salespeople will talk you out of it, saying that analog will be phased out. They've talked about this for years, but its still around. You will give up some of the fancier features of some of the phones, as the ones with mp3 players/keyboards/etc etc are not TRIMODE. If you are a verizon customer, the phones with the most features that still have trimode at the time of this post are the Samsung SCH-A870 and the LG VX5300.

Uh yeah, got it. heheh. Thanks timmy you can eliminate my completely inane question if you want. I read the TR, but it didn't sink in, apparently.

Hey where did you guys stay? In a tent, yurt, or motel?

Ooooh, Bolivia might take the cake for crappiest. How about crappiest in the NW? Schweitzer is better? Of course it is. Duh.

Ahhh! Ski Lift Crashes at Bearstown Resort (S. Korea) Two ski-lifts filled with skiers crashed down onto Big Bear Slope at the Bearstown Ski Resort in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province Sunday at around 6:45 p.m., injuring seven people who were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police cite a loose clamp holding chairs to the cable coming undone as the reason behind the accident, which caused the two lifts to collide in mid-air before falling. http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200612/200612040011.html

One of the towers on Chair 5 at Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho *FELL OVER* last week. No joke. The lift had been shut down after maintenance noticed a crack. No one was injured. They hauled the wreckage away yesterday.

Nice turns! I wondered if the Wallowas got as much snow... anyone else notice that the Aneroid Snotel site isn't reporting snow depth? The Mt. Howard site must get all the snow blown off it. Kurt - I'm in CdA now, but I'll be looking to head that way, too.

An Idaho forum. neato. I split my time between Cd'A and Moscow. Generally go somewhere else to climb, though. Post Falls is great, but rock climbing is pretty limited otherwise unless you're into to alpine stuff on the Selkirk Crest. Perhaps once there is a critical mass of climbers we can stay ahead of the moss around sandpoint. Are schweitzer crags still covered in the crap? I climbed at LaClede years ago and had a terrible experience... maybe I should go back and give it another try? Don't tell anyone about all the great skiing! There might not be enough to go around....

My car was broken into a few years ago at a Hotel on Robson Street downtown Vancouver, along with every other car with Washington plates that was parked in the hotel garage and lot (a total of 7 or 8 as I remember). All of the others were nice SUVs and caddy-style cars, mine was a POS chevy... it was hilarious, there was a trail of gear leading away from my truck. First, a left LaSportiva Makalu, then a sleeping bag, then a dromedary bag... miscelaneous stuff sacks... finally in the alley 1/2 block away the other Makalu boot. My only loss was the damage to my truck! Apparently the hoodlums have no use for outdoor gear because they took off with an armful but dropped everything. We reported to the Vancouver Police but basically they didn't do anything (no surprise). Anyway, its anyone's guess why they only broke into the Washington rigs. Maybe you're better off not to cover up the gear... let 'em see that its a bunch of crap they don't want!
