Better than reading your "look-at-me" spray posts

Apparently so. That's the liberal modus operandi. Especially the part about daydreams... and wishing things away.

There is research in this area. But you can just use your brain, man. Fuckin' A. The reality is our culture is a violent one, especially compared to 30 or 50 years ago. It seems pretty obvious that if you pump millions of brains with thousands of violent images over years that you'll get an uptick in violence. And there are the societal factors which I already mentioned, which compound these influences, and you conveniently ignore. We live more and more silo'd lives with less community and extended family structure and support, often in abusive situations (drugs, alcohol, physical abuse) and so on. the weird Asperger kid no longer has an uncle, grandpa, pastor, whoever to turn him around. So he fixates on thoughts of violence and sinks to a mental state where he goes on a shooting spree. Performing back ground checks or more screening will have a very limited impact, and you aren't going to be able to ban guns. You could potentially impact society - through introspection and incremental change.
-
There are plenty of studies on this. What you consume does impact you. And it's compounded by other factors - your home situation, economic realities, drug and alcohol use, and so forth. But sure, you can just deny it and claim this is only about guns and their availability. Ostrich's seem to do well with the same technique.

Focusing on gun laws is nowhere nearly the solution. It's the culture man - from media to entertainment to a variety of social ills. We have a culture of guns and violence and that does not just mean ownership of firearms.
-
Because that is a whole different issue. And it's not about *excluding* the stats it's about showing those separately. I am concerned about kids getting killed first and foremost, and about mass shootings at a lesser level. There was just report about an 8 year old girl getting shot by an 11 year old for not letting him pet her puppy. That's fucked up shit. How did the kid get access to the gun? Will the owner of the gun have his guns taken away and never allowed to possess firearms again? I'd support that type of law - but it would never pass muster.
-
Source? And are you including suicides and deaths by cops killing in the line of duty. Those need to be separate stats.

not just 2 - that's 2 examples. jebus, Vanya You realize the site has an ignore feature and that you don't HAVE to reply to everyone, right? Kind of like real life, you know? just because someone is here does not mean they are worth the time it takes to reply. I've been on this site 10 years and those two are about as worthless as they come - no desire to continue wasting my life energy on them. Been there, done that.
-
There are reasonably interesting people to converse with - like you or Gene I'm just not interested in hearing from the mentally ill.

keep replying ttk - I don't read your garbage.

we deny epileptics the right to drive a car b/c they might have seizures while driving, no? color-blind folks are denied pilot's licenses b/c they might crash their planes people are denied security-clearances frequently on the basis that their past indicates a chance they will be untrustworthy in the future we deny convicts voting rights based on some hazy fear they'll use that power to a nefarious end this isn't "minority report" what exactly is the thing we're trying to solve? mass-shootings are admittedly hard, but then they're only a very small part of the gun-death problem. if total gun-deaths are what we're going after, it's an easier nut to crack. and the ACLU supported the "right" to create and view child porn "art" rather than arrest such sick f***s before they rape little kids

Yes it stormed all night on Friday and we got trace snow. It melted by Saturday afternoon and the weather cleared up and was perfect through Sunday. I highly recommend the trip. We had the whole place to ourselves and only saw one other party in passing near oval. OH, and a cowboy on horseback rounding up his cattle to take back off the mountain from fall grazing. He merely passed us on the trail on Friday.

depends on what qualities are created to allow one to pass a background check. if criminal history is the sole determinant then yeah, it would not have done any good in this one case. but if a broader range of qualities for failure of background test is created, it would be very useful. For example, if you fail out of army bootcamp, (how the F does one fail out of army bootcamp unless you are insane?) then you are not stable enough to own a gun. All the qualities would be geared towards determining mental stability. requiring gun owners insurance would naturally create that system. licensing would partially create that environment I realize the knee jerk reaction is the fear that the system will evolve to exclude the mass majority of folks and be the threat to our freedom when the gubermint takes over. I don't prescribe to that fear. Gene, The problem is we can not punish people or deny them rights because of what they MIGHT do. And more and more often in these cases we see troubled people who snap and act out. There are warning signs, yes, and in some cases mental diagnoses, but we as a society we don't lock up, force meds, or deny rights to them. And the left is certainly on board with that. There are many reasons someone could fail boot camp, and that would not necessarily preclude someone from being a responsible gun owner. There really are no litmus tests that you could apply to catch all these cases that we see. I think the bigger issue is our culture and how we tend to let people on the fringe an fall through the cracks coupled with a culture of violence in entertainment and a myriad of other factors.

Trip: Wish Slam - Standards - Courtney, Star, Oval Date: 10/2/2015 Trip Report: This past weekend I opted to visit the Chelan-Sawtooth wilderness when the temps were not in the 80s and 90s... and get my fill of larix lyallii in their finest glory. We drove up early Friday, getting a pastry at Cinnamon Twisp Bakery en route to the trailhead. The sky was overcast but it did not rain the whole way in to Fish Creek Pass. At the pass however it was blowing like crazy (40 mph gusts) and we wondered what the weather would hold for us Saturday with clouds rolling in. We opted to tag Courtney quickly then drop to Star Lake to camp about an hour before sunset. Courtney summit p0rn: Star from Courtney: Summit views: The weather came in at night, with wind, rain, hail and snow. At 6:30 am we awoke to a whiteout and temps in the 20s with windchill. We slowly got going and headed up Star. It took about 2:20 to get up Star and clouds were going in and out on the way up, but we ascended into a whiteout on the summit block and resigned ourselves to no views, huddling in an alcove, and taking a food and water break. Miraculously the fog cleared and we got our views, albeit with the prices of admission being a healthy dose of cold and wind. Valley near Star Lake: We returned to camp, and packed up, heading over to the base of Oval via the abandoned Buttermilk Ridge trail. Leaving camp: We arrived at camp with plenty of daylight to camp and relax but not enough to summit Oval then, so we opted for the former and set our alarms for 6:30. The weather had already improved and that night was quite pleasant - clear and less windy. We got up to a frosty morning and headed up. We made quick work of Oval arriving at the summit well before noon. We lounged around for an hour taking in the views. Pond at camp below Oval Peak: Oval Peak summit p0rn: Finally we dropped to camp, packed up and headed to the cars, Kellys in Mazama for dinner, and a long drive home. Gear Notes: Warm clothes

you seem to be a mess but I don't see you going postal on anyone any time soon not so sure about the other miscreants on this fine forum

Mass shooting occcurs. Lefties demand tougher gun control laws. Repeat ad nauseam. Should crazy people have guns? Obviously not. But someone can pass a background check, get a gun, then go crazy/snap/whatever. And the articles out now claim this kid had Asbergers. Know anyone else like that Ivan?
-
would such checks actually have prevented this incident? or a large percentage of the previous 50 mass shootings? new laws seem to appeal to a certain "type" of person. I'm more for things that actually work and address the issue they claim to
-
Yep. I agree, that unfortunately that's the case.
-
come on, glorification of gun violence in the media and entertainment can not have anything at all to do with gun violence, could it? Encourage everyone to watch as much gun violence as possible!

humans will always kill each other. there is no problem that is 'solvable' here
