It's easy to walk on the ferry here in P.A. No long lines. Second the Bug Museum. There's a great japanese deli in the mini mall adjacent to the bug museum ...and a great japanese restaurant a couple blocks W ...or the Noodle Box for good cheap asian fast food. There's an MEC store in Victoria, worth checking out. And you can buy acetominophen with codeine over the counter in CA, but it's illegal to bring it back to the US. That stuff knocks out my nephew's headaches.

Very sad... You can never let your guard down in the alpine, and despite doing everything correct, there always remains an environmental hazard factor that is beyond your control. It's important to be ever vigilant and alert. That being said, you can't remove all of the risk.

Nice job reporting on this incident. We should also acknowledge Wilderness District Ranger Kelly Bush's vision and leadership in working to get the NOCA operation certified for short-haul rescue with a helicopter. This was the technique that made this rescue possible.

Kelly Bush has also been working to get their rescue program certified for another specialized application known as the “short haul.” In this application a rescuer or perhaps a litter with a patient is flown while suspended from beneath the helicopter. “Kelly has put in an awful lot of work to get it to the point that soon we’ll be certified for short haul,” Reece said. Currently only larger parks such as Yosemite, Grand Teton, and Grand Canyon, all of which have full-time helicopters based at the parks, have short-haul programs in place. One requirement in the licensing process is to develop an on-call contract for a helicopter certified to perform short-haul and step out landings. This will not represent a significant change in the park’s relationship with Reece, because, according to Bush, Reece has always placed a high priority on responding when climbers need his help. “He’s been in Eastern Washington on a fire contract,” Bush said. “He’ll find a way to break loose and show up within the hour if I call him. Some days in the summer no helicopters are really close. But he is willing to finagle himself loose and fly in. So that has been to the benefit of quite a number of people who’ve been flown out in his helicopters.”

I'm amazed how climbing in NOCA has evolved in the past 10-20 years. The standard has been raised, and this ascent was up to standard: quick, light, and followed by an on-line multimedia TR share-out for the community.

I've always preferred to stay off that S face route on the summit pyramid. The SE ridge route is much more pleasant, and avoids all the drama on the S face on busy days. Easy class V rock.

I think I'll wait and see if more facts come out before I draw any conclusions. Then I'm going to put the DVDs for the Kung Fu TV series back into my Netflix queue for a refresher viewing.

Nothing much changes. I saw snowmobilers ignoring the wilderness boundary on the N side of Adams back around 1983. I hate snowmobiles. I could see having one if you lived in the Methow, to be used to pull a little tracksetting implement around your property for grooming nordic ski tracks. Recreational snowmobiling is simply incompatible, inappropriate, and environmentally damaging and unsustainable. Bunch of fat fucks.

I live in my camper truck, and I love the Glacier area! really cool locals around there. Hard to beat skiing Shuksan then hangin at Grahams listening to some live music by the woord stove with a cold one.
