What other ways are there? I rest my case. Open your eyes and look around you. People volunteer for things they believe in. They start organizations that succeed in helping groups they wish to help. People take time after work to be a Big Brother or Big Sister. They donate money, withhold money from companies they don't want to support, invest in socially responsible funds, start magazines, and plant grassroots movements just to name a few. They vote with their actions, with their money, with their words--not just with a piece of paper that doesn't count for shit anyways.

I am voting you off the thread.

I respectfully disagree. It is not up to us to decide when a person is allowed to excersize their right to free speech; especially by using our personal values as guidelines for others' right to voice their opinion.

Don't blame the small businesses, they didn't know. It is the banks they borrowed from who should be ashamed. The banks themselves had a hefty incentive to use the loans: They kept the interest while the government insured most of the loan, creating a nearly risk free proposition As an added incentive, the fees banks pay to the government were cut in half, saving banks up to $5,000 each year for every $2 million they lent.

I know that statement was not directed toward me, but to the general population. Nonetheless, I disagree with you. I think that people have been sold that line of shit for too long. If you think you can discharge your civil duty by taking paid time off work to vote, writing a whiney missive, or becoming another politician, you are sorely mistaken. People accomplish far more lofty goals in many ways other than the three restrictive options you offer--and they are not acquiescing to anything.

I wonder what would happen if we all agreed to not pay our taxes for one year? We organize and issue a clear statement about how we don't want our money wasted anymore on corporate welfare, $600 hammers, whatever. That might get the government's attention. Somehow, I think that they have forgottent that we are not here for them, they are here for us.

"Nice try guys. You were just this far from the REAL summit."

When I lived in MT, I was on 20 acres--a small spot on the map. I had about 60 square feet of lawn--all of which was useless but I kept it up anyway. The neighbor's dog used to make the trip all the way from his barn (he was a farmer and had plenty of land) to my lawn in order to take a huge dump. Every morning I would start out my day picking up that dog's shit. So one morning I caught him at it, and so I brought a bit of meat and a ziploc out with me. I gave him the meat and made friends with him. I then picked up his shit with the bag, closed it, attached it to his collar, and sent him home. This became a ritual for about a week until finally the owner got wise and stopped letting the beast come over to use my yard as an outhouse. Had I read this article first, I would have saved myself a lot of effort and just staple-gunned or epoxy'd the dog's ass shut. I love Montana.

What about SE Asia? Sweat factories? If the conditions are so bad in the factories, why do people want the jobs so bad? Because its better than starving to death? So a job in a sweat factory aint so bad? Becuase the alternative is death? Are you saying that the best way to analyse a situation is in the most simplistic, dualistic manner possible?

The chance of being crushed by a falling object is probably less than being killed by a driver who is too drunk or too tired to be paying attention to what he is doing. I think sometimes we focus our fear on the wrong things.

Doesn't matter how you pronounce it--its not there anymore.

not growing. Money neither created nor destroyed, economic homeostasis. Sorry, I'm too out of my element to know how to say this is economic terms. Growth = construction starts = jobs. An economy that isn't 'growing' is in recession. This is exactly the type of economic thought that needs to change. If you read more material coming from the newer branches of economics, you come across "sustainable" economic thought. A good introduction to this is in last month's Scientific American. I have read a number of great books that delve into the subject and it has influenced my thinking quite a bit. Just a suggestion...I am not trying to imply that I am Master Of Econoimic Thought or nuthin.

It is too bad that those people got killed in an avalanch on the road--hope it was a least painless for them. Very sad. I got caught in the traffic heading back from Index--all the folks who turned around due to the rockfall compounded the traffic problem. It was a bit of a wait. On the radio, they kept saying that the 90 is still a safe road--like they were trying to convince people to not change their driving habits in the future. Duh, with so few choices to get back into Seattle, what do they think people are going to do?

Yeah, I've been around this site for quite a while now, so I've seen it all. Damn, I miss trask and company, but you're right, those guys had self-control issues... sometimes the abusive language and vitriol was just too much to bother to muddle through. So you just skipped those parts and read the good shit. I miss 'em too...

Okay. These people MUST be helped. If they are not, more will suffer and more will die.

No psudoporn on the nonfluff thread. Either make it hardcore or start a fluff thread.

We follow up herring with Aalborg and Jubelium. As long as you like powerful, not-sweet schnaps, you won't mind what's been in my mouth.
