  1. Democracy in the Philippines limps forward Mar 17th 2005 From The Economist print edition MY WEAKNESS is my strength, declares Grace Padaca, the governor of the Philippines' poor northern province of Isabela. She is referring not only to a childhood bout of polio, which left her unable to walk without the help of crutches, but also to her lack of political connections and financial muscle—all of which made her an unlikely challenger to her predecessor, Faustino Dy junior, at last year's election. His complacency, she says, helped her to win, and thus to put an end to the Dy family's 41-year monopoly of the job.…

  3. I love this story... Couple's deformed pet squirrel safe at home after road trip Thursday, September 5, 2002 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MACHIAS -- A squirrel with half a tail and no left hind foot is back with his caretakers after 10 days on the lam. Stumpy the squirrel was found six miles from the residence of Steve and Marcia Carter, 52 and 51, who fought back tears when he was returned. On Sunday afternoon, a woman heard faint tinkling and remembered reading a newspaper article about Stumpy, who had been outfitted with a bell on a collar. Sure enough, there was the 8-inch rodent, sitting in her driveway. The woman's husband tried throwing a towel over the squirrel, but Stumpy was too quick - until a neighbor arrived with a fishnet. Stumpy was placed in a cleaned-out garbage can with plywood over the top and the finders called the Carters. When they arrived, Steve Carter lifted the plywood and Stumpy leaped onto his shoulder and uncorked a succession of squeaky barks, seemingly well-nourished and none the worse for wear except for a scratch on his shoulder and five ticks. Only when he saw his cage inside the house did the squirrel settle down. "He knew immediately he was home," Marcia Carter said. Born without a left hind foot, only one toe on the right hind foot and half a tail, Stumpy was taken to a wildlife rescue center after falling out of his nest as a baby more than a year ago. Experts believed he couldn't survive in the wild and the Carters adopted him. Keeping a wild animal is usually illegal in Washington state, but the couple's home about 30 miles north of Seattle is certified as a wildlife sanctuary. Squirrels rarely make good pets, but Stumpy was an exception, maintaining a sweet disposition and never biting the many people who petted him. The deformed squirrel took to walking on a rope leash, playing in the Carters' front yard, sleeping at night in a cage in their house and riding on the dashboard of Steve Carter's truck when he made his rounds as a contractor. The couple even took Stumpy to Arizona in the truck for Christmas. When the squirrel vanished from their yard Aug. 23, possibly in search of a mate, they were heartbroken. Now Stumpy has some company - three orphaned baby squirrels that were brought to the Carters after his walk on the wild side was reported in The Herald of nearby Everett. They say those squirrels eventually will be released. For the time being, they're keeping a more watchful eye when Stumpy is playing outside the house. "I want him to be fully recouped before I close my eyes," Steve Carter said. After that, he and his wife say they won't stand in the way if Stumpy decides once again to return to the wild. 15. 'Wedgie' added to Webster's dictionary THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CLEVELAND -- Wedgie, a teenager's locker-room nightmare, has made it into the dictionary. Webster's New World College Dictionary based in Cleveland said wedgie was among its new additions to its latest edition. The new edition will carry this listing: wedgie: noun. a prank in which the victim's undershorts are jerked upward so as to become wedged between the buttocks. The dictionary also carries the tradition wedgie definition of a type of shoe. "`Wedgie' was always a part of the high school terminology that you sort of never thought about later," said Editor in Chief Michael Agnes. "It never really entered the mainstream until the '90s. It broke out of high school and, boy - if you don't know what it is, you're absolutely at a loss." The new edition will reach bookstores by May and has 58 new entries, plus another 20 new senses of existing words (such as wedgie). The additions include Al Qaeda, blog, cargo pants, irritable bowel syndrome and partial-birth abortion. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/a...ary%20Additions
