Dru can be a pretty direct Canadian sometimes, when he's really sure of his position.

I spoke today with someone who has been involved with the planning for a recovery effort. Apparently the victim is a foreign national who was resident in Abbotsford. There has been involvement by very senior RCMP, and they are keeping a tight lid on information. So there seems to be an international relations angle to this that may explain why so little information is being released.
-
Last I saw was a news item concluding with "The names of the climbers will not be released." Presumably at the request of the families. Still, you'd think the climbers' grapevine would know who was involved...

"Black flies, little black flies, always the black flies no matter where I go. I'll die with the black flies picking my bones in north Ontario-io, in north Ontario" The NFB animated short accompanying Wade Hemsworth's "Blackfly Song" is a classic. The flies themselves, on the other hand, are surely the spawn of Satan. Sort of like Devil's Club with wings.

Thank you

I've had a bad feeling about this one from that first radio report Sunday morning, and the few subsequent pieces of information have only made it worse. I wish they'd release the name so we'd know, rather than waiting, and wondering...
-
Yeah, that's what the CBC reported also, pretty much verbatim. The description of the two climbers gives just enough information to have me really worried...

Heard a brief item on CBC radio news this morning, but not much detail. Anyone know what happened?

"We've got the bull by the tail, and we're looking him straight in the eye"

No! No! There you go hoping again! Stop it! Don't you understand - that's what they want you to do. Then they'll just crush your hope again. Don't let them do it. Don't hope, ever, not for anything, not for a second, not even a little bit. It's the only way to save yourelf.
-
Be careful - that's a classic technique for breaking down prisoners. They say or do something that gives you hope - then they crush it before your eyes. Then, they do it again, in some other way - they say or do something that causes you to think there may be hope. And then they crush it again. And they keep doing it, again, and again, and again, until you finally despair of ever feeling hope again. And then they do it some more. Eventually they destroy your soul. It's sadistic as Hell, and it's very effective. So don't let them make you feel hope, or they'll win.

That's different - Cheney's part of the "old Gestapo". Sheaf is OK with them - it's this "new Gestapo" he has problems with. I guess he's thinking we don't need a new Gestapo 'cause the old one is still working perfectly well - if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?

So, what's been editted out here? "Ted got up to follow her asking why ... ? To this query she spun around and etc etc" There seems to be a bit of the story missing in the middle there, replaced by "..." It's an odd bit of writing, that clearly indicates something has been omitted. So what was the rest of Mr Hayes' question, and why doesn't the writer want us to know? Is it possible that somewhere in the "..." part of the exchange, he said or did something to warrant a charge of disorderly conduct?

And So, he's not bound by rules governing the executive branch because he's part of the legislative. And he's not bound by rules governing the legislative branch because he's part of the executive. So he's not bound by any rules at all. I don't see anything wrong with that at all.

Wow. I wonder if he's had training, or if he's self-taught?

What rain??
-
Editted to eliminate double-post

No, it isn't raining, at least not here in Squamish. High cloud, a few blue patches, quite warm, and dead calm. Maybe it's raining where you are, in which case I'd suggest you get out of there if you can.

So Paris Hilton has requested that we ignore her from now on. I sincerely hope the media will respect her wish to live out her life in anonymity, and stop providing 24/7 coverage of her every move. Please?

Looking at the forecast and the satellite shots, Sunday afternoon will probably be ideal for beer testing.
-
Agreed - it's been pretty nice all day, dry and warmish with occasional outbreaks of sunny. We had a bit of light rain overnight, but nothing serious. If it doesn't rain overnight again, then you should be able to run up something tomorrow morning before that system hits.

None lately, actually. We sold a few when I first opened 8 years ago, but they never really did all that well, so I eventually stopped carrying them. I've got a few of the Mountain Hardwear versions here now, but they don't attract much attention. Wool, on the other hand, has been a reliable best-seller for about the last 4 or 5 years. Now, if I can just convince Icebreaker to make a merino-based gabardine jacket...

They ran some tests based on fabric samples recovered from Mallory's body, and found the clothing he was wearing at the time (some combination of heavy cotton, silk(?) and gabardine) was actually better suited to high altitude conditions than all the fancy space-age synthetic stuff we use today. In the lab, it was found to be warmer, lighter, more breathable, and allowed greater mobility. Conrad probably saw that as a challenge to try the stuff in real-world conditions. I think it's a cool experiment, and will be interested to see how it all performs. I'm not so sure about the home-made oxygen apparatus, though.

It was worth reading that article just for the final two sentences: "Can you give us an example of an exercise of good judgment by Alberto Gonzales?" he asked. This time, Comey had no narrative. "Let the record show a very long pause," Specter said. Maybe there's still hope.
