Idiot educators who worry too much about little kids' egos are the ones who come up with ideas like 'creative spelling', in which a kid finds 10 words to learn, copies them down misspelled, memorizes the wrong spelling, then spells all ten words wrong at the end of the week.

Whatever. Books work well for most everything. Learning from books/theory is a learned skill. If you never learn it, you'll be in trouble at some point. There has to be a balance. I don't think it's fair to say that schools ignore the needs of more hands-on oriented students. Indeed, schools are sometimes moving too far in that direction.

Backcountry is real, the lifts are just practice. I'm a pathetic enough skier that I could (and will) benefit from skiing the lifts, but it's a tool. I remember my backcountry days far more than my lift days, it's not all about the turns.

Keep your gloves dry.

Skiing was miserable, too, hard crust over slush, I couldn't turn, period. Kick turns and traverses down the entire glacier.

Lift skiing is so suck.

No snow to the talus fields. Probably not much snow left in the first talus field by now. Find the trail and you'll be fine. Just make sure you find it. Take flotation, that snow gets SOFT in the afternoon...we were hating life even on skis. No real crevasse danger last weekend..enjoy the slogging.

Rock climbing sux. Too much time spent jabbering, belaying, racking up, etc. I wanna MOVE. I suppose at some point my interest will shift back to technical stuff, but it might be a few months.
