  1. When I first heard this story I made the assumption that there must have been something sketchy about the women... not a fair assumption at all, but perhaps one to help me believe that this sort of aparently "random" violence wouldn't *really* happen to normal or good people, especially those out doing a wholesome activity. Turns out I knew the younger of the deceased, in addition to another of the (not involved in the homicide) sisters. These women were vibrant, intelligent, interesting outdoorsy folks... the kind that we all know or could easilly have known. Unthinkably tragic. Condolances to the family.
  2. wait... i thought this was a "no-photoshop" thread??

  4. Welcome home Sam!!! Reading your story brought back nearly the intensity of emotion of the initial event... thanks for taking the time to write out such a detailed and open account of your experience. It's fantastic to have you and the menagerie back! e
  5. From: http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.cooper.360/blog/ Tuesday, February 14, 2006 You too can be a 40-year-old virgin Someone told me that women are having their vaginas rejuvenated. That's right, rejuvenated and reconstructed and revirginized even. I thought they were kidding. But my producer and I looked into it, and sure enough, it's an emerging surgical trend. Vaginal rejuvenation costs thousands of dollars and is done with a laser. It includes a variety of procedures, such as women getting their labia made smaller because it is uncomfortable for them to engage in physical activity or have intercourse, women getting their vaginal canal tightened as it was pre-baby delivery, and other women going one step further by getting their hymen (the gateway to the vaginal canal) tightened. This last procedure can, in a sense, make a woman a virgin again. In many instances, the women who get this surgery need it for medical reasons. But not all. Some women do this as a gift to their husband or significant other. I interviewed one couple for this story who has been married 18 years and has two children. The wife recently had her hymen replaced as an anniversary gift for her husband. We also talked with the doctor who did the surgery and even got to be in the operating room during another woman's surgery. You can see the video (the PG version) tonight, February 14th, Valentine's Day. These women say it's the perfect gift. But beware, it isn't cheap.

  10. Cliff Mass is a professor of atmospheric sciences at the UW and an excellent forecaster of weather. I believe he also does little weather updates/forecasts on NPR.
  11. Does anybody know of any good (easy to follow, not super strenuous) day hikes in the Washington Pass area that would be suitable and fun for a couple of not-very-experienced hikers who are unfamiliar with the area? I would like to make a good recomendation to somebody from out of town. Thanks!
  12. true, thanks for posting that oly. sounds like they are just moving a little slower than anticipated and needed an extra day. that's a nice development!
  13. I've got some friends who are a little bit overdue (I'm not too nervous yet, just curious.) and am wondering if anybody else was on the route and saw anything out of the ordinary (noticed a couple of guys moving slowly, an injury, etc) yesterday. They were climbing the complete ridge, and I know it's a long route and were probably just benighted and bivied, but if anybody saw anything I'd be curious to know. I've still got many hours until the agreed upon time to call a rescue. Thanks
  14. Regarding Scenic HS: From what I've heard... The land has aparently been sold to a Japanese businessman who intends on developeing the springs somewhat "tastefully" and in the style of Japanese baths. There will be a fee to use the springs, and the road will be entirely improved (I believe the road project is well underway...) and the springs wheelchair accesable. My understanding is that the new development will be focused lower on the hill, closer to the "Honeymooners Pool" than where the deck and main pools used to be. Obviously not an ideal situation, but then again, I suppose the pools in their prior state wern't exaclty ideal either... at least from the perspective of the sherif and the land owners. And while it certainly won't be anything near "natural" now, it could be argued that it wasn't nearly "natural" before either, and now perhaps there will be fewer of the problems cited by those who felt rightous in the initial destruction of the deck and pools. The whole thing is dissapointing and frustrateing, but perhaps the end result will indeed be an interesting, relaxing, clean and pleasant place to soak that is neither too expensive nor too much like Tubs.
  15. I have a good friend who *really* needs a ride from Seattle or Portland to somewhere near Kalispel MT sometime around Dec. 22nd. Is anybody already headed that way and wanting/willing to have another passenger? The company is guarenteed to be excellant, they are fluent not only in climbing, but also in spanish, literature, poetry, running, photography, world affairs, deep introspection, goofy silly stuff... and on, and would surely share the cost of gas... anybody????? thanks!!!
  16. Hello- I'm looking for a couple of nice Seattle-skyline/Mt. Rainier-from-a-distance/ferryboat/puget-sound/spaceneedle type pictures for use on a small but commercial website, and thought I'd extend the solicitation to real people rather than just to a big stock photo company. I would be able to pay you for your photo if I used it, so please be prepared to name a price. PM me with links if you think that you have something that might work! Thanks so much.

    Welcome home Gary!
  19. More from KING 5: 09:09 AM PDT on Sunday, May 16, 2004 SEATTLE - A second rescue team was on its way up Mount Rainier Sunday to save an injured climber and his partner who have been stuck on the mountain since Saturday. The first two-person team left Saturday, but was stopped at about 1 a.m. due to whiteout conditions. The team hopes to reach the injured climber, 39-year-old Peter Cooley, by noon or 1 p.m. today. His climbing partner is Scott Richards, 42. Both men are from Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The two men are more than 12,000 feet up the mountain along Liberty Ridge - one of the hardest spots to reach high on the mountain. Whiteout conditions at and below the summit have grounded helicopters, leaving this rescue mission solely to the climbers on foot. "I think time is of the essence, but I would also have to say there is no quick way to get somebody when they are 12,000 feet. When they are on such a highly technical route such as this one," said Lee Taylor, spokesperson for the National Park Service. When Cooley fell his rope saved him, but he slammed into rock, breaking his arm and severely injuring his head. "He's combative - if his friend tries to get him into a sleeping bag, he'll resist and he's also disoriented and can't really speak so all those things indicate a significant trauma to the head," Taylor said. Richards contacted rescuers by cell phone. Sunday morning, he was able to relay that his friend's condition had not worsened. Rescue officials told KING 5 News that given the difficult location where the climbers are located, it could take as long as two days to get Cooley off the mountain. The pair had supplies to get them through the night and the Richards had managed to pitch a tent and boil water, Taylor said. The second team of five climbers is going to set up a base camp. Helicopters and more rescuers are standing by.
  20. slacklineing is fun... it might not help your climbing dirrectly, but it is a good way to practise intense focusing, which in turn can be helpfull with climbing.
  21. Nice job Gary! Good to know about the tick prevelance as well
