He gave a major plug for Feathered Friends on his show today. Look for a bunch of KVI people walking around the Eastside in full down suits.

So that would be 30 min miles, gaining 1000' a mile. Sounds reasonable for someone in really good shape.

Are you talking round trip or just to the top?

Link Here Yeah, I know, Orcas aren't really whales. I am wondering what Sea Shepard and Green Peace are going to do about this.

Sandy Pitman's porters.

Editorial suggestion - Hippies have changed, man.

I would be willing to put some hardware money towards developing some routes out there if anyone thought there is something worthwhile at the quarry. But the potential sounds pretty bleak. Anyone know who owns the land?

I had no idea the St. Helens shot stuff larger than ash that far. Crazy.

I have heard rumors of some sport climbing at the old quarry by beautiful downtown Gorst. I don't know if there are any bolts or if they had to top rope.

Today is the aniversary of the big eruption if I remember correctly. Question - Anybody here summit before the eruption? Was there any technical difficulty to it before or was it a slog like it is today?

I am in line with Lambone and Mr. Radon's sentiments. I lost a friend a decade ago in a kayaking accident. That event provoked a lot of contemplation about my outdoor activities and how they effect the people I choose to be acountable to (my wife being primary among them). I chose to continue to paddle and climb, but I do have a different attitude. Instead of trying to attempt things that are probably pushing the end limits of skills, I am more content to attempt routes or rivers that have less exposure but still allow me to work on my technical skills in a more controlled setting. I am now more interested in the quality of how I did the activity than the sexiness of the end result. If that makes any sense. I still push myself and try to advance to doing harder routes. I am just not in as much of a hurry to bag a harder route even though I would like say I've done it. If I am not comfortable with the situation I am content to turn around and have no regrets. This attitude will probably always restrict me to a maximum potnetial of mediocrity in my paddling and climbing and make me look like a in most of your eyes. But its the balance I have found that works for me.

Lewis and Clark: an indian chief with paralysis

My dad is an MD and a casual Lewis and Clark buff. He has a book called "Only One Man Died" or something like that which chronicle the journey from a medical perspective. I'll ask him or try to find it in the book next time I see him and post about what I find out. Its hard to imagine a poison that would only effect him for 3 years and be cleared up so fast. Wierd. -

Word to that. I haven't done this race much but there was always a buzz that they might have to shut down the kayak leg. Some old timers said they threaten that every year. I say screw the surf skis too. Might as well have the race in a pool if they won't run it with a few whitecaps.

Just saw on the news that a climber fell on Liberty Ridge, broke his arm, and took a hit to the head. Apparently he was with 1 partner. They tried to call in a rescue, but weather didn't permit helicopter use. They have to bivy tonight. A rescue team is approaching on foot. Apparently the injured climber is in and out of consciousness. Plesae correct my info if I got anything wrong from the TV news. Thoughts go out to the climbers and the rescue team tonight. Everbody take care.

Ahh, I the stories that could be told about JayB and sleeping through alarms in the early morning...

I've been told that the average cat bite is worse than dog bites most of the time. Not because a dogs mouth is cleaner, but because they tend to tear the tissue more. That supposedly makes it easier to irrigate the wound and decreases infection. But cat bites are like getting poked by syringes. The germs fester inside and sometimes abcess. Or so I was told when I was bitten by a cat a few years back. I got on antibiotics within 2 hours and I still got a wicked infection. The next day I had red tracks creeping up my arm. Had to take the next day off work so I sould elevate my arm all day. This of course only applies to the more typical single bite. I would much prefer a houscat attempting to tear my throat out than a mastiff.

Great article. My excitment for the hybrid thing taking off is definately getting harshed.
-
Serious question - How many other Presidents have been arrested?
-
I have been very excited about the prospect of Hybrid autos becoming more mainstream. Obviously reduced emissions is a good thing. But I was also under the impression that they would cost less in the long run due to saved fuel cost and tax rebates. This article Link Here argues that the savings are not as likely as I thought due to increased up front costs. Add to that - the batteries are very expensive (1-2K?) to replace and no one really knows how long they will last. I have heard that the manufacturers are not very helpful in helping consumers figure this out. Of course if gas cost continue to skyrocket or stay high, that changes the value equasion. Anyone know more about batteries for the hybrids? Are there other hidden costs? Do the batteries create environmental problems of their own? Thoughts anyone?

I agree. I think he would prefer to cancel all ability to send money (if that was possible) but it probably wouldn't paly well politically, especially for Jeb. I don't know if there is a way to stop families from sending money back. I guess they would have to be convinced to be more loyal to the ideaology of sanctions than to their families. And I think that goes against human nature. Geography also plays a part. We would have much less of a problem re: families sending money if we tried to cutoff Macedonia instead of Cuba. I don't propose a good way to stop supporting Cuba. There are always going to be loopholes. When resources are tight, the bastards who we are trying to get rid of are going to be the last to feel the effect. Too bad the Bay of Pigs was such a disaster.

Let's answer one question at a time. You can't just dodge the ones you don't like. He specifically said if we don't support dictators or terrorists, they won't stay in power. Castro is still in power as far as I know. What happened to his logic? I would argue that we have been supporting Castro by allowing Cuban imigrants to send money back to their families ($100 million per article below.) Often the same people who were lobbying for sanctions against the country were at the same time sending money home (I guess its OK to engender economic hardship to force change... unless its your family). It looks as though Bush is trying to crack down on this by limiting the amounts of money to be transferred. I am not very impressed with the effectiveness of sanctions, but it seems as though we should either cut them off or we should open up markets to them. I think the half-ass approach is contributing to the stagnation. Sending money back to Cuba Link Bush's attempt to restrict sending money back Link Here

But does that mean if the Iraqi's were actually guilty, this treatment would be OK? Its still systemic. I figure the guards and administrators are just as responsible as prison rapists if they knowingly allow it to occurr. I lsitened to some conservative radio sation yesterday. They were discussing an editorial that I unfortunatly can't reference. Supposedly a journalist published an article yesterday trying to argue that the release of the photos has caused a decrease in attacks against the US. Says the only thing they respect in the Middle East is brute force and the power to humiliate blah blah blah. I find the notion that this scandal will help out troops in the long run to be crazy, but a lot of people agreed with the theory.

I think you raise a very salient point PP. We are demanding higher standards for care of foriegn prisoners than we have for our own citizens domestically. But I would argue that we are better off as a society if we demand more humane treatment of prisoners both domestically and with POWs (or whatever you want to refer to them as). Maybe we need the Red Cross to visit San Qunetin .
