I don't hire illegals, but I wish I could, because it's hard to keep our company fully staffed. Yet in our little town, I drive past at least two dozen able-bodied males who choose to drink 40s and deal rather than work. I say that's a criminal mistake we've made in this country, building a system that keeps them out of the workforce and on the edge of incarceration.

People hate not being in control. They resent the US's strength with or without their input. "The arrogance of those Americans!" A few years ago we hated (but in many cases, secretly admired) the Japanese and their economy. Now they are a non sequitor. Envy.

Until we solve the problem created by fatherless households, IMO we will continue to have a huge problem with black males jobless and in prison in this country. It is sad, but it is a fact.

Hey Gowans, c'mon, in human systems you know that nothing runs perfectly. But the key statement you made, that zeal to achieve blinds all else, I just don't buy. Read the other thread today, where quite a few people say they are only working as a means to an end. I think the biggest problem in the US is tv- hollywood- and media-related, however. It's the worship of celebrity over real achievement or heroism. That has spawned outrageous behavior for the sake of itself, and put the quest for true achievement out the window.

Years ago I sat next to a sales VP on a plane, and we were talking about work. I told him I'd recently gotten an MBA. He asked me if they preached that line about not getting your meat where you get your bread. I said "yep, and I adhere to that rule." I had to give away our aging dachshund who just couldn't handle our twins as they got bigger and rowdier. Luckily I found an elderly couple to adopt him. But every once-in-awhile, when they want to make me feel bad, the kids ask "Why did you sell Oscar, Daddy?"
