DFA, try the Bukowski short story ("pamphlet") Bring Me Your Love...

Go Dru! I too was raised w/o a TV, which I see as a gift my parents gave us kids...we sure hated it at the time, mainly embarrassed lest our classmates know. Thank God my father turned down a local TV station's request to do a story on us for not owning one. Trying not to let my kids watch much either, but with twins it's almost impossible not to...sometimes we've gotta have the break. Everyone's covered the literary front well in this list. For good perspective buy a copy of the Rand McNally World History Atlas. This atlas shows what was happening around the globe during different periods of time, has lots of supporting numerical data, and is fun to study a little at a time.

I forgot to say: anything by Roald Dahl. As a parent, his refreshingly dark kids' stories like Matilda and Charley and the Chocolate factory were good. But his adult books and short stories are excellent. My Uncle Oswald, Switch Bitch, etc. E-Rock suggested Water Method Man (Irving). Read it if only for the chapter "One Long Mother of a Day," the funniest damn thing I ever remember reading. Best recent non-fiction book: Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea. This is both the saga of a ship going down during a hurricane in the 1800s with unbelieveable survival stories, and a modern drama of a young man's success story. Thick, but you will not put it down once you start it.

I think this group's too sensitive for me. Cryin' over violence in a book? Brace up, man! Goddamnit, don't make the likes of Ernest Shackleton, George Patton, and Teddy R. roll over in their graves any more! Wait a minute...there are a few exceptions...kids...puppies...Bambi...oh never mind.

Trask's list was a very good one, the Kipling verse is great. Don't avoid the prose, though! The Man Who Would Be King, The Jungle Books, his short stories, all of it appeals to those of us who seek adventure and who have the frontiersman spirit. I would say that The Old Man and the Sea is my favorite Hemingway book. Anybody who has fished for big fish in blue water should read it. I would put On the Road, Electric Koolaid Acid Test, and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas all in the same group to read half-drunk or stoned one weekend. Fear & Loathing was my favorite book at age 23...I don't know how old you are today. Hunter Thompson's short stories are also entertaining. DFA's list was good, except for that Edward Abbey one...don't read that anarchist shit!

Dru, From trial and error, I find that most of the time I can insert a URL .jpg/other image IF I can click on it, but I can't extract an image from a website that is not "clickable." However, I have seen that others have been able to somehow extract images (ex: Trask did with the Spaceboy in tinfoil). How do you do it??? Thanks, Rob
-
Yes, wiseguys, got the disease, and trying to graduate...no chance you'll shed a little light on how to do it RIGHT???
-
Since this thread is all about length, can someone answer a technical question? Why the hell do most of the images not work when I insert URLs? What's the secret?
-
Touche'...but, hell, I'm an old guy and I don't have the patience to read ya but so much. I know the rest of this cranked-up, ADD crowd ain't readin' but one line per post of you and the Dear Dr...
