what I retained from Witch Doctor Wall (and Sunday cruise in particular) is short, cool approach, miles (literally) of beautiful rock, hundreds of dirt and bush filled cracks, enormous potential for 2 pitch climbs (think defoliant and backhoe), all in all a worthwhile trip!

quote: MtnGoat: Israel: Constition, laws, rights, religous freedom. Palestinians and their islamic supporters: none of these MtnGoat is poorly informed: http://users.cyberone.com.au/myers/return.html http://academic.udayton.edu/race/06hrights/VictimGroups/Palestinans/palestinans02.htm in other words, it's not much different than what we did to the American Indians except times have changed and a little powder in the eye (barely) is needed to maintain appearances. sorry about the new thread but the original one does not take replies

the north face has only one ~80' continuous ice pitch and it is often not very fat. Matt's guesses are right on the money. Without pickets be prepared to move together on the snow patches (~40deg?).

1) it was only a reference among many others I could have chosen. 2) you are focusing on the form and not the substance of the argument: it is hypocritical to claim to be concerned about human rights while shaking hands with sharon in the white house. 3) even if the piece you refer to is right about this particular editor of the nation, I don't see how you can infer that everything published in the nation is rubbish. You'll have to admit this is quite a leap and somehow akin to the image of "shooting the messenger" as discussed by sternstein ("this editor is wrong in this one piece therefore the nation is bad"). Anyhow I can't personally say whether or not this is justified criticism; I read "fire at will" and thought it reasonable. just to add to the substance of the argument: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2373191.stm

ok, so what are you trying to say?

the mountain can be done comfortably as a 4 day trip (2days to bivouac hut at the base of the north side, 1 day climb then down to the meadows, and 1 day out from the lodge). I would not recommend the standard North Ridge (mostly loose 3rd class) but if you climb some in the rockies it should not be a surprise. The North face is a good climb in the right conditions (ice and mixed). The area is beautiful.

banning lurkers does not seem like a good idea. I suspect it depends on your vision for this site but I'd guess that most go through a lurking stage. In other words the unability to lurk could lead to a lack of renewal. I am still confused about what brought these threads down. [ 10-28-2002, 05:05 PM: Message edited by: j_b ]

so what was it? the server chocked or something?

quote: I thought you'd like that j_b, all it demands is that those you claim support screwing others actually, personally, and expressely claim they do so. Not your contention that they do by your standards, their contention they do, by their standards.I see, we don't spew 25% of global CO2 emissions because we don't think we do? or is it that spewing CO2 in the atmosphere is not bad because we don't think it is bad? quote: heck, he still hasn't found evidence that we support "screwing" other people by our admission, not his. I can claim all kinds of things about anyone, if I am willing to use my views of their activities as "proof" in absense of asking them what they really believe and support. interesting logic.

quote: What favor would that be? Are I now to assume that disagreement with you indicates the disagreer is calling you names? That's quite an assumption.sigh, let it go MtnGoat. I was replying to Greg's post and telling him that *I* did not need to call him a moron. quote: Now you've proved to me that your a moron in two threads.
-
quote: j_b's debate moves into "moron" claims because someone doesn't agree with him. no, apparently you are the only one who could not see I was simply returning the favor.

quote: You may exercise your personal freedom and liberty to the extent that it does not infringe the personal freedom and liberty of your neighbor. Very simple. How is that "screwing others"?if I have to explain to you how our spewing 25% of global CO2 emission is screwing others, I don't need to actually announce to the world 'your are a moron' because you do a pretty good job of it on your own.

quote: People can drive any damn thing they want. If you don't like it, tough shit. It's their money, their bag. of course. I am also for taxation to be proportional to greenhouse gas emissions (something like: emissions^n with n a high number). You all said doing something about global warming was going to be expensive, well you were right! (doing nothing about it will be even more expensive) quote: I totally agree fuel should not be subsidized, but neither should it be penalized based on the moral views of folks who say they don't like using it.Global warming is not a moral view but a reality. Your litany about your god-given right to screw others is tiresome.

quote: Hey, whereabouts is that Crystal Blue thing?hold on to your hat .... it is at the far end of lake serene
-
I'd think pretty much every year but may be others have a better idea (IdiotGroupie?). The lake is at 2300' and the NE side does not see the sun in winter. The local temp is colder than at an average 2300' location, but the climbs are exposed to avalanches so climbing there may not be advisable in marginal conditions.

I put up a few pics for Jason to look at. They are in the album, enjoy. http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/cgi-bin/album/album.pl?album=alpinelakes http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/cgi-bin/album/album.pl?album=iceclimb

I think that both oxydation and hydrolysis (absorption of water) play a role in break down of polymers, albeit very slowly in typical storage conditions (no uv, little moisture, normal steady temp). Also nylon is cooled from a melt and therefore must have an amorphous component which may not be stable in the long term.
-
over time nylon becomes brittle which means the sling material loses its elasticity (studies cannot detect any other effect that can be imparted to aging per se). I don't really believe the elastic properties of the slings on your friends is absolutely critical considering the rope is the first and most important shock absorber in the system, yet for peace of mind (we all know how important it is when leading) and the very occasional oddball situation where added elasticity is critical, I'd re-sling the cams with new material.
