I took out an old tree for a friend once in Issaquah. It was in the middle of a thicket. I thought it would fall hard right but it fell soft right and into another tree. Two major chunks broke off and fell back toward me. I ran like a panicked idiot out the only escape route. When I was not quite far enough away, I tripped and fell. As I fell I looked back to see a eight inch diameter crusher coming my way. I hit and lunged sideways. The crusher slammed the spot I had just vacated. My friend and his wife were watching the whole thing. He laughed hysterically. She sat down and cried.

How many travel to die? Do you have to be American to find yourself? And if you aren't an American anymore, do you stop being you? I think it is pretty sad if you need to know what country you are from to relate to other cultures. In fact, I think it is quite likely that our biggest problem as a people is our inability to see things as other cultures see them. I have been in Syria, Mexico, and many parts of the US and I have been treated better outside of the country than I have inside. Unfortunately that doesn't magically insulate American travelers from the assholes who think killing and kidnapping will make a difference. I gave up a good carreer as an archeologist in the Middle East because Americans were being taken hostage right and left by the Shiites in Iran and their backers in the middle east. Saying that we should travel the world proclaiming our American citizenship to everyone like we have some sort of right to do so is an admirable way to risk death. Your rights will be buried with you. Terry Waite spent seven years as a hostage because he was American. I was doing the same job he was when he got taken. Try facing that reality from a shithole in the middle of the unknown world with no hope for rescue before you give advice from your living room sofa.

I am always willing to consider a Rainier trip. But I have no sense of humor so no one will climb with me. Other than that, I qualify.

Question to all: say you were bivying at Thumb Rock and you had packed a shovel up there to dig a platform. So someone from another party (who didn't bring a shovel in order to save weight) comes along and wants to borrow yours, would you let them? Part 2, would you ever do this; that is, rely on borrowing gear from some other person, not in your party, at a popular bivy site? (not talking about emergency situations here, thats obviously different). As long as I wasn't using the shovel, yeah I would let them use it. I would think of myself as being really rude if I didn't. I would think it sort of foolish not to bring a shovel though. They are light and they are multi fuctional (digging, deadman anchor, and as someone mentioned before in another thread smoking instrument). That would be me at times. By the time June rolls around and a high pressure ridge is sticking around, I'll go up and use somebody else's platform. Shovels are handy though. I often bring my tricked out titanium snow saw too. Making snow forts is fun.

Relying on someone else bringing a shovel is a realative thing. I have chopped out tent platforms with my adz. If you are going up there and want to give me a pm a few days prior, I'll try to arrange to take a shovel up there for you to borrow. Just don't try to borrow my wife.
