I haven’t done a hike all summer so I called Wolfie on Tuesday to see if he was up for one; he said to call MarkL and see if he was interested. Mark said maybe. He called Thursday, we’re going to Sloan Peak, cool I’ve never been there. We rolled out of town Saturday about 6 and after waiting for Wolfie to repack his pack about 3 times we were off about 9. We wasted some time trying to figure out where to cross the river, of corse it was at the most obvious spot. Once crossed the trail climbs out of the flood plain and is easy to fallow. The trail appears to be abandoned and has lots of blow down and brush. There’s flagging to help you through the vague spots. Once we broke out into the open it was a no brainer up to the bivy spot below the glacier. We got there around 3 and were kind of tired so we decided to go for the summit Sunday. We veged out, took pictures and ate dinner. The sky was hazy from fires and we could see the smoke from one east of Glacier Peak. We could see a group of Mounties camped way down in the trees, we had the better spot. We watched the sunset and turned in just before dark. Woke up a few times to stars and the Milky Way, just before dawn a sliver of new moon came up. Got up just after daylight, as we were getting ready to go 8 Mounties wandered by. We wandered up and noticed the Mounties getting on the glacier kind of low. We kept going up till we found some tracks from Saturday. We roped up and put our crampons on. Snow was good, with nice bridges. After crossing we ditched the rope and headed for the top. There’s a good trail that wraps around the mountain with some nice exposure. A few cool moves brought us to the top. Hung out there till the Mounties showed up. Shure enough, they had to turn back and walk up the rock and fallow our route across the glacier. Got back to our bivy about noon, packed up, hung out and started down about 2. Got down to Mountie camp as they were packing up. We kept going down the trail and didn’t see them. Turns out they had bushwhacked trough the scrub cedar and picked up the trail lower down. Yikes! Took some nice breaks at cool spots one of which had good blue and huckle berries. Had a nice dip in the river and got back to the cars about 8. The beer was still cold and Mounties were jealous ‘cause they had none. The 6,000 feet of elevation did a number on my quads, they’re still sore. Biking doesn’t prepare them for hiking. Picture tomarow.

I read the hijinx on how to rip-off Focus on the Family. It's about as immature as those folks who "rent" their prom-dresses from Nordstrom's and use the easy return policy to get their money back the next day because "it just didn't fit right". It's a violation of the spirit of their "charity". That ain't protest, that's childish, and although it might make you feel good, it won't change anyone's opinion. The same folks who do this sort of thing might tell you that they're all about free expression....as long as it's their particular perspective. You don't like the stance of Focus on the Family? Contribute to or participate in some group that supports your own perspective and if you can sway enough folks, maybe things will go more your way. Ordering their free stuff as a joke or selling it on EBAY is like people who trash political signs or take stacks of campaign literature of an opponent and heave it in the garbage. That's as self-righteous as the guys you don't like. Childish, I say. Here's some folks sharing their different viewpoints: Here's a couple of guys discussing the issues: Here's a young lady with some creativity: Childish? Yeah shure, like thier tactics are any better. Just look at Rove.

Looks like fun! -
Crux, dics are way less hassle and work way better in the rain. They work fine for me, you can always upgrade to a better mechanical or hydros. You can also get bigger rotors for evan more stopping power, philfort, metro is puting tripple bike racks on all it's cross lake busses. They would like to hear from you if you've been left behind. We'll see who the real hard core are once the rain starts.

I think there's more bikes on the road this summer than last. Lots of hype lately, there's also more people in town, some may have given up living far from work. Fixies are dumb, wonder how long the fad will last. I would get a single speed if Seattle was flat. My commuter bike. Say what you want about REI, this bike rules. Replace shock seat post w/ regular one, added fenders and flat/ spd pedals. No more blown out rims from brakes grinding them down. I ride year round so I was going through a set of wheels every 2 years. People see the disc brakes and say "Where's the suspesion?"

Grandma is fading fast so my brother, wife and 9 MO, 2 1/2 YO and 4 YO are coming to town in a few weeks. This is a last minute trip so we didn't have time to look into places to stay. There's no room at my place or uncles or cusins. Any ideas? We know it's not going to be cheap. Need a hotel w/ 2 room and small kitchen downtown or north.

Hey Choada, I call BS on your post. Great race! US riders have kicked ass for years yet pro cycling isn't a big deal over here. Who will it be next year? I bet the sponsers do thier own drug testing to avoid another embarisment.
