  1. I was up in the North Cascades late yesterday and missed the Tacoma Pub Club meeting, wondering if there is a spot decided on for the 24th yet. Beck
  2. From my understanding, MORA's use plan for Westside road has gone to the "let's not plan to use it" because of it historically getting washed out every so often. With the new Bush adminstration's plan to"streamline" the "backlog" of maintence projects in the Nat'l Parks, having MORA admin plan to fix it up enough for public use is probably a long shot. The new draft plan for use in MORA shows shuttles being implemented for guests of RMI and guided climbs, possibly Paradise Inn guests, NOT dayhikers(as of the last planning documents I saw from MORA)for the Paradise Area.
  3. "reduce, reduce until there is nothing else that can be left behind." or somesuch from Y. Chouinard
  4. Lisa, how about you pick a spot for the following Tuesday? July 24th? I think there's already a consensus on the Parkway Tavern (313 North I st Tacoma) for this upcoming Tuesday.
  5. The first meeting of the CC "we're drinking now" Pub Club was attended by exactly two of us- My buddy Mike U. and myself- we both rode our bikes, him from Bellevue and me from downtown Seattle. We took the corner table on the deck and enjoyed a cool breeze wafting over the trees from Lake Washington. Pitchers of Alaskan Amber quenched our thirsts. Very attractive housewives flug their chests about the deck like status symbols, and we enjoyed the show. We drank, laughed, shared photos, ogled the ladies, intimidated the locals, swaggered, swore, chowed down and left, all without spotting a single other climber type. It took me less than twenty five minutes to bike from downtown Seattle to MI, I'm really suprised no one else in the area came down. it makes me wonder if I show up at the Parkland on Tuesday, do I need to bring someone else, so I'm not drinking alone?
  6. How ELSE do you go swimmin out in the wilderness? who cares if you're nekkid, Mama Nature? Speaking of great places to go for a dip, Has anyone been all the way into Gamma hot springs off the N side of Glacier Peak?
  7. Saturday ropes training With Mountain Rescue, Sun/Mon-Tues am Chiwawa/ Fortress or something closer maybe Columbia or Kyes up by Monte Cristo if the weather doesn't go foul- bringing a friend, going to be nice and relaxing. [This message has been edited by Beck (edited 07-13-2001).]

    work!?

Shylock, and amateur gynecologist. Winter weekends I help run the BC ski patrol program at MORA. Just got onto one of the mountain rescue units. Used to be a luger in Lake Placid.
  9. Who hasn't sung "workin' on a chain gang" at the end of a real long day?
  10. "Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire- But if it had to perish twice, I know that for destruction ice is also great, and would suffice." R. Frost seriously, what I'll focus on as a mantra while training is, CITUS ALTUS FORTIS- fast high and strong And as for training, I'd reccommend just hammering out a commute to work on your bike. Foul weather, oh baby, bring it on! [This message has been edited by Beck (edited 07-12-2001).]
  11. Goin' to the Parkland next Tuesday! burp!Someone from the north needs to pick a spot for the following Tuesday, July 24 [This message has been edited by Beck (edited 07-10-2001).]
  12. Well, it could be crowded but there's a first time for everything!! They've got seating outside too
  13. I'm game to meet in alternating locations, varied locations, my cabin off Denny Creek, wherever, I just want to get IT GOING ON! and start some drinking with all you yahoos out here. Why don't you, Erik, or whoever is South dere pick a GREAT location, maybe the people B'ham way can pick a good North end spot and we get one in Seattle and just make it a regular thing. I'm totally flexible to any suggestions.
  14. Sorry to hear everyone's making it into such a big deal! For those of you who have OBVIOUSLY NOT BEEN to the Roanoke,it's the oldest business on MI, since 1914, and feels like an old clubhouse- dark wood, no pretense, big windows, huge porch and back deck. I picked it IN the spirit of solidarity as it IS located in a central location for east or southsiders.I don't live in the burbs, I picked it as it's a real nice bike ride across the water to it- come on you guys, quit your griping about a couple people pulling togther something positive and go be angry in traffic or something. Hope some happy types can make it, this is all in the spirit of fun and not an ego-shooting gallery. [This message has been edited by Beck (edited 07-10-2001).]
  15. Hear, hear, ladies and gents(although i use that term loosly on this site)- the first meeting of the Cascade Climbers "We're drinkin' now" Pub Club is called to order tommorrow, Tuesday July 10th commencing 5:30 pm on the deck at the Roanoke Tavern, Mercer Island. Your event will be cohosted by the first two climbers that were able to pull this plan togther. Remember, the party doesn't start unless you get there- Climber type attire appreciated, or just look for the surliest, least cultured table in the place! [This message has been edited by Beck (edited 07-09-2001).]
  16. Scrambling off the Mountain loop hiway, Vesper/Sperry or Forgotten with a six two blonde (and I do mean blonde!) stewardess babe friend of mine then camping out!!
  17. Weekly meetings at a pub in seattle, they can sponsor us and get us tshirts and cut rate prices on kegs to set up at the crags! What would be an appropiatly named bar? The sunset tavern cascade climbers club? the last resort? the Brick in Roslyn( naw, they just tolerate climber types in there!) 7pm thursdays??
  18. Kennedy to Boulder Basin is a quick jaunt up, don't sweat it I've climbed it from Kennedy to the top and it's no big deal. should be a great time on Glacier, enjoy yourself Lisa, and maybe we'll be seeing you sometime!!Sorry I had to follow the thread and put in my two cents worth, As I do love dogs, just not in Natnl Parks, but on this site you've just got to follow the string wherever it's going(although I think I was addressing the original post as well!) Take care, Beck
  19. Canine Parvovirus may not be the virus that spreads to other species, I don't have the specifics memorized or anything.
  20. To the dogowner guys and girls out here following this thread, dogs CAN do more damage in a park than an RV. There is a very common bug dogs live with, I believe its canine parvovirus, if this is transmitted to deer or other types of large mammals the whole population is in danger as it is fatal to these types of hoofed animals. Would you want to know it was your dogs' shit that killed the elk herd outside the park and not the golf course development? That may sound extreme, but as an example, on Isle Royale they had huge decreases in the moose herd in the eighties when some self rightous dog owners figured the dog ban didn't apply to THEIR dogs! The moose contracted this fatal illness from the dogs and DIED FROM CARLESS PETOWNERS NOT RESPECTING THE RULES IN NATIONAL PARKS!! And yes, too many roads/RV's in the National Parks, has anyone seen the highway overpass that's built in Yellowstone near Old Faithful?
  21. Does anyone want to make a not-quite-so-big-a-production out of this and just meet up for drinks some evening after work? Like at the Virginia Inn in downtown Seattle or the Roanoke Inn over on Mercer Island?(I don't live there, but it'sa nice bike ride over there and the roanoke's deck ROCKS!!!) I'm not going to waste a weekend camping in someone's backyard- get real dudes(and ladies) I'LL be going out to the MOUNTAINS!!
  22. I'm up to meet for drinks anytime downtown Seattle m-th after general working hours at a (preferably) nonsmoking bar- I'm totally game into putting the names to a face and seeing what everyone's into.
  23. Me and a couple buds skied back around from melawka lakes off denny creek back to Alpental yesterday and got about 1,000 vertical descent in these north facing bowls dropping back to Snow Lake- excellent 1st of July ski at Snoqualamie pass.
  24. For all you dog owners out there, there is a company that manufactures doggie goggles. I saw them in a copy of "Mountainfreak" magazine, if anyone wants that info leave a note on this thread and I'll see if I can find the company name. They looked like cool bugz type goggles. As an annendunm to Matt and dogs in National Parks, Nat'l Parks are considered "nature preserves" and dogs spread disease to animal populations without coming into direct contact with them (via feces) as well as (potentially) threaten and harrass wildlife and visitors. There's a real good reason those volunteer patrollers waved you off the mountain and to all other dog owners out there, yes, no dogs in any backcountry area of any national park anywhere in US.
