From BDEL.com It’s on. The First Snow of the Season Sale is now starting. Snow is finally here, so get the gear that you need! The top of Little Cottonwood Canyon here in the Wasatch has received 8 inches (it didn’t all stick, but it fell), which means that winter is here in Utah and for the next 2 days (till midnight on October 6th) all ski and ice gear on the Black Diamond site is 15% off. The process is easy. Just order anything that you want/need/can justify to your significant other as you normally would and then go to the checkout screen. Once you are there, type in the code HOOFSGARAGE during the checkout to get your discount. The sale price will not be reflected in your total when you place the order, we will take that off when we enter the order in here at the office. It will be reflected in your confirmation e-mail that we send back to you as well as on your final charge. This is a special promotion for those of you that signed up, but feel free to forward this e-mail to any friends that are still skiing skinny skis or think Snargs are great ice pro. We also have killer deals on the following items. http://www.bdel.com/gear/snow_sale.php

You can always buy the demos and rentals from places like Cascade Crags (who has some right now for 50% off) and thebackcountry.net, which is where I got my first pair of boots and bindings for pretty cheap. Don't forget www.life-link.com under their "specials" page. STP and backcountry.com always have good deals as well. Evogear.com also has some nice skis for CHEAP. I know they had some Karhu boards from 2001 that were brand new for $35 at size 174 or so.

Just wanted to drop a note that this is happening this year: 2005 MAC It is on October 15 from 4am until ? The route is from Alpental to Defiance via hiking. From Defiance you have to get to bikes stashed at the Talapus lake TH, and then bike back to Alpental. Visit the yahoo groups page posted on the link above for more information. There are currently 4 teams and a total of 10 participants. There is a limit of 20 people. There is no entry fee, but there are prizes for this unorganized hike. Total mileage is estimated at 23 hiking and 16 biking. You must join the Yahoo Group and get registered to join the race.

I agree on the NE Ledges. It went quick when we MysticNacho and I did it, but then again we rapped on pitch 5 of 7?..... Either way, it was mentally nerveracking because of the exposure and that thought of "Just one bad foot placement..." Good gear would be far and few between on the ledges IMO, since almost every handhold I tested seemed to wiggle. Maybe you could lasso some heather? I think we were a little low on the exit and had to do a few mid 5th class moves to get back up to where we were supposed to be. I really want to get back and finish that route this year........ Nice job Tony and Paul - great photos but I sure wish Paul would get a freakin digital camera. Those scanned images come out a little weird.

This one kills me: Approach #3 - Hide in the Bushes. This approach depends on the fallibility of the human guidance system in the morning (see approach #1). Get up early and hike to where you get ALMOST lost (this is key), and hide in the bushes until the next party comes along. Then stealthily hike behind them and wait for them to go up the wrong route. Then, by process of elimination, find the RIGHT route! Note: if you are detected on the trail - try to look skyward and whistle. This looks completely innocent. They will assume you are bird watchers or hikers. If this fails, put on your helmet. They will assume you are mountaineers, somehow separated from your flock, and therefore are no threat. Remember, the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese!

Just sent in some $$ today. I have climbed there quite a bit over the past few years and feel the need to go back there plenty more times now! Nice feeling to know you might have had an impact on keeping such a cool place available to the community.
