Rainier’s season has been getting shorter due to glacial wasting and recession. I personally would not attempt the standard routes on Rainier past June; even earlier for many other routes. This season is likely to be particularly short due to the snow drought in the western U.S. Also, I would skip St Helens.

About me 24m, I've done Pico de Orizaba (19000ft/5800m), Izta, and Mount Elbert CO in the winter. I also rock climb frequently if that makes any difference. I'm planning on doing a trip to do Ranier, Baker & St Helens with the ultimate goal of building up my skills to tackle Denali. At this point, I know I definitely lack some technical knowledge necessary to summit Ranier such as crevasse rescue and navigation. But nonetheless would like to attempt to tackle it. I'm not a total gumby though — I have done a few high elevation peaks w/ crampons, a high level of fitness & am comfortable organizing the proper gear. I was planning on going late August, since that's when I turn 25 and can avoid the under 25 fee for renting a car. But I also heard that can be a dangerous time of season due to rockfall and widening crevasses. Part of me thinks I should just get a guide, but I dislike the handholding and lack of agency that comes with hiring a guide, not to mention the cost. So if you would like to tackle Ranier this season, or have some wisdom to spare to someone of my situation, I would greatly appreciate it! contact loucks12345 [at] gmail

Chatbots are terrible at lots of things, and are imposing untold externalities on the world but, yeah, they're really fucking good at helping humans write instructions for computers. I have to use claude code for work coding and it's incredibly helpful. You of course have to check things, and it can be super dumb, because it does not actually understand anything. It is rearranging words from the internet, not expressing some internal representation of the world. But it's super useful. I haven't used the free version since work started paying for it, but in the past there was a big difference in how good they were.

Unbelievable....this is version .01. It has issues. But I just made this in an hour using natural language prompts. https://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/trsearch/ Does it work well? Not really. But as a POC pretty cool. I'm not a coder. I ran out of tokens for the day, so I'll pick it up the next time I have time.

Anyone out there "vibing"? I just started playing around with Claude. Before I was thinking hiring out for a developer to handle creating new functionality (and restoring some things we used to have). But Claude has me thinking otherwise, and maybe we can keep it inhouse. The most immediate need is for a Trip Report Search capability. Search all the Trip Reports by: Area/TR Forum Author/Submitter (V2 can include other party members if they are tagged into the TR) Month or Month Collection (Season) Date Range (Radio button so time/date would be radio button/either but not both) Keyword Photos-Yes/No FA/FWA/FFA ....maybe just start with FA yes/no ? My day job has me pretty busy to the point of exhaustion on many days, and my free time is often trying to find time to either get exercise for myself and my dog. I do plan on retiring at some point in a couple years (though that could happen sooner, as that is the way the world is these days). So I have limited time, which will change in the future. But for now.... Anyone else trying out Claude or another model? I'm considering purchasing Claude right now. I'm also looking a one of Jetbrains offerings, though I'm still researching that.

@JasonG I just wrote up an account of the first ascent: https://jimwalseth.substack.com/p/blind-date-in-the-bugaboos I used a photo or two from this post, thanks again for that @JeffreyW -
There is actually one in the works from Bliss Climbing (out of Canada). There are two gorgeous looking protos that have been made so far. Hoping production is underway or will be soon. 🤞

Thanks folks. I've gotten several PMs from willing recipients and will find a new home for at least some of these ropes. Based on the info in those links, we may keep one (the Duodess) as a crag rope. I def don't need all of these.

Feathered Friends -40 Sleeping Bag, VG Condition, Size Long: $350

I don’t use that site. Perhaps there are more people over there. I think it’s a corporate site, owned by OnX. it’s another place you could offer stuff for sale. You could also put it on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. -

It makes me worry that a guy wrote me on cascade climbers that I should list the stuff on Mt project? What was that about??? -

I shared a picture of the rack you’re selling on Instagram. There are a lot of people who no longer come here but follow our instagram account. I stopped using the Facebook account we have. But doing that got more eyes on your stuff. I don’t really like doing it, but need to remind the Instagram generation we still exist and are an alternative when/if they ever get sick of “being the product” .
