AlpineK Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) Planning for the 2014 Ski In is underway. Ski In is a fun annual event for both skiers and climbers. A free camping east of Mazama is reserved. Setting a date for the event is the only thing holding us back. Like others we're watch for WSDOT HWY-20 Updates. As of today they are past Liberty Bell 2 slide path on the east side and past Easy Pass on the west. April 14 WSDOT Picture The campsite is down by the river with an excellent cooler available [img:center]http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/plab/data/3061/medium/1-W-DSC00437.jpg[/img] The campsite has a fire pit and an outhouse is nearby. If we can figure out how to turn the water heater on you can even take a shower. Unfortunately a super spiffy kitchen is not available [img:center]http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3486/4047509940_5311e7263c_z.jpg[/img] The campsite provides easy access to rock climbing near Mazama, and skiing at the pass is 10-miles away. Based on WSDOT comments Mid-May is the expected time for the highway to open. Edited May 1, 2014 by Feck
JBo6 Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I doubt there is one since WSDOT doesn't have one for opening the pass. Color me interested though once there is a date.
AlpineK Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 I've Marked the weekend of May 17 as the date for Ski In. Basically Friday the 16th in the afternoon to Sunday May 18. From Today's WSDOT update Apr. 30 - West side clearing has progressed to about a half-mile from Rainy Pass. The East side crew progressed to Bridge Creek around MP 161 despite having to clean up 5 more slides behind them. The reopening estimate remains mid-May. There is a chance the pass will open this weekend, but it seems like May 17-18 is a relatively safe pick for the event. It avoids conflicts of interest like the St. Helens Mothers Day ski too. Good skiing and rock climbing for everybody at the party! More information will follow. The most important point is posting directions to the campsite online is bad juju. You can send me a private messages for a map to the site.
dave schultz Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Feck - thanks for the info - I hope I can make it.
ilookeddown Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I look forward to see everyone again. If you have never been to this area before this is a great opportunity to learn about some of the best ski touring, climbing and mountain biking this state has to offer. I am surprised that more people don't take advantage of this opportunity to come out and go skiing/climbing (the mountain biking is not an official cc.com thing but there will be a couple rides) with us? We don't expect you to be an expert skier or climber. We do expect you to have fun! It's also a great opportunity to meet new people who love the same things you do. Hope to see you there! Dave
RocNoggin Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 North Cascades Hwy set to open Thursday May 8th at noon. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes/northcascades
AlpineK Posted May 14, 2014 Author Posted May 14, 2014 NWAC posted a Special Advisory on Monday. According to the message the warning related to warming conditions on the western side of the Cascades. New snowfall received late last week will be susceptible to warm temperatures and solar effects through Thursday. Extra caution is advised for those backcountry travelers pushing above treeline near and west of the Cascade crest, including the higher volcanoes, during this warm stretch. Fortunately temperatures will cool for the weekend and Ski In. In any case there are no posted avalanche warnings for Goat Wall or Fun Rock at any time this week. I'll be heading over early and will bring some firewood, beer, coffee, and a few food items to share. Bring some firewood if you can. If you need directions to the campsite send me a Private Message before mid day Thursday. If I don't respond other site moderators will have directions to the site they can share on request.
