by now, I imagine most of us have heard of the sherpas who were killed on Everest this week while attempting to extend the fixed line route for the sahibs to use to access the south col. the American Alpine Club has already established a fund to benefit these men's families. tax deductible donations can be made through the AAC site at www.amercanalpineclub.org - there's a link to the fund on their home page. As far as I know (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the commercial outfitters who hire these guys do not provide them insurance, so please be generous.

Not to discourage anyone's generousity as I think this is as good a reason as any to donate... but according to this guides blog...

"The Sherpas are covered by insurance that all operators pay as required by the government of Nepal, this amount was increased by 10x for this season. "

It sounds like the Sherpas are (justifiably) concerned that they may end up not seeing much of that money however. The above blog makes base camp sound like a pretty intense place to be right now.

I know a couple of the guides up there right now. I can only imagine what they are going through. The occupational hazards of that job are high and reading news like this reaffirms my decision to retire from guiding. It's a heavy responsibility. That said, I support those who continue to pursue their goals in the mountains. It also is a reminder that you don't have to be at high altitude to die in the mountains, so please be careful out there, folks.
