Trip Report:

Pearly Gates are a fun way to spend Monday morning. I enjoyed them so much I opted to descend back down them. I didn't see another climber on the mountain until I was headed down from the hogs back. Great day on the hill. Now lets hope it snows!!!

Nice! Did you use snowshoes? Would an ice axe and one ice tool have done the job?

You may have heard there is an absolute dearth of snow so far this winter. No snowshoes are needed anywhere on Mt Hood.

Thanks For The TR. I would love to not see anyone on hood while climbing. Granted last time I climbed hood was spring and I climbed with 200 other people. It was a zoo. Thanks for the pics

Snow shoes would work for the approach but useless up high...1 tool and an ax would be fine for the chute or depending on how comfortable you are with the exposure going up the gates.

I tried the same yesterday (Tuesday 12/31) and although the hard packed snow/ice made for great walking, we eventually met with very high winds and 20 or 30ft visibility. Turned back a little above Devil's Kitchen.
