jrex Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Trip: Mt. Hood - Pearly Gates Date: 12/30/2013 Trip Report: Pearly Gates are a fun way to spend Monday morning. I enjoyed them so much I opted to descend back down them. I didn't see another climber on the mountain until I was headed down from the hogs back. Great day on the hill. Now lets hope it snows!!! DKH looked to be rocky From the berg Looking up the gates Fun little ice step Looking back down Gear Notes: 2 tools made for a fun climb Approach Notes: Crampons the whole way.. Quote
Josh Lewis Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Nice! Did you use snowshoes? Would an ice axe and one ice tool have done the job? Quote
Water Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Josh, You may have heard there is an absolute dearth of snow so far this winter. No snowshoes are needed anywhere on Mt Hood. Quote
Josh Lewis Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I should do something cool on the next good weather window. Quote
Dchromey Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 That's awesome!! That word snow.....we've been missing it all year! Let's hope ALOT comes next year! Quote
harrai Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Nicely done! Would have been fun on Thursday if I'd had a second tool. Thanks for the photos. Quote
chris54 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Thanks For The TR. I would love to not see anyone on hood while climbing. Granted last time I climbed hood was spring and I climbed with 200 other people. It was a zoo. Thanks for the pics Quote
jrex Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 Snow shoes would work for the approach but useless up high...1 tool and an ax would be fine for the chute or depending on how comfortable you are with the exposure going up the gates. Quote
APE Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I tried the same yesterday (Tuesday 12/31) and although the hard packed snow/ice made for great walking, we eventually met with very high winds and 20 or 30ft visibility. Turned back a little above Devil's Kitchen. Nice work! Quote
