Cds26 Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Anyone know what the conditions are like on the NF, or some of the steeper routes? South Side? Quote
Water Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 a friend went up for some bc skiing monday around tline. said aside from the weather it was pretty lousy snow--breakable crust, mashed potatoes underneath, and icy. but again thats around treeline, maybe theres some more uniform snow up higher Quote
Dchromey Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I'll be going up there next weekend and then in December. I'll give u some updates and maybe some pictures. Wanna go as far up as I can. If the weathers good Quote
KirkW Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Water already gave you my synopsis from yesterday. Breakable crust over waterlogged pudding was the theme of the day. At least I wasnt working No idea what kind of shape the upper mountain is in as conditions were so poor that we never felt the need to venture much above tree line. Nothing but whiteout suck, freezing rain and sleet at/above TLine with rain nuking everything down lower. It dumped BUCKETS as we were leaving. I'm sure that most of that rain fell as snow at the higher elevations but based on the TR posted here from last week it sounds like it fell on a thick icy layer which would make many routes nothing but a ticking time bomb. YMMV of course. Also...there is a sticky at the top of The Oregon forum that deals with all things Hood. If you start a conditions conversation in there you'll likely get a few of the Hood regulars to chime in periodically. Quote

Dchromey Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 South side. I'd climb it in December probably, I'll be down there longer. Quote

powderhound Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Great firm conditions yesterday. Lots of people summiting. We found good mixed conditions on the nf of illumination. Quote
Jason L. Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Left Gate is in great shape. DKHW and variation still too bare. Another team summited via Reid today. Quote
Cds26 Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 (edited) awesome, im glad someone summited the reid, wow illumination sounds exciting nice work Edited November 25, 2013 by Cds26 Quote
Winter Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The Old Chute - West Crater Rim was in great skiing condition yesterday. Corned up around 1 pm. 150 ft of side slipping off the summit ridge into 6000 ft of bliss back to Timberline. Should be good all week with this weather as long as there's some sun. Quote
Julian Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Anyone have conditions on the Reid and/or Leutholds? Was thinking about soloing one of them this weekend. How's the descent and crossing on the Reid glacier, much danger of hidden cracks for the approach to either route? Quote
