Roadstead1 Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Who is going to this Future of Fixed Anchors Conference I thought I would know someone that would ride down with me, share the gas and spend a few days climbing! Out of all the climbers I know that bolt routes nobody is going. So I ask; who is going and would ya like to share my ride and split the gas? Quote
Otto Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 What an interesting two days that would be, wish I could go. Love the "Thaitanium Project" name - I wonder what that is all about. Though I'm not sure we need to "Organize, Fund, Operate" bolting efforts, it would be fun to learn about those who do. One thing I really want to know is why doesn't Metolius have a product to compete with the Fixe anchor chain systems. I'd rather buy locally produced stuff, and I like their hangers. I see they are not represented in the agenda, but Fixe is! Anyway, thanks for posting this, have a good trip! Quote
Otto Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Thaitanium Project: "The Thaitanium Project is a non-profit effort dedicated to providing and installing titanium climbing bolts throughout Thailand. Due to a rare convergence of environmental conditions and minerals contained within the rock itself, Thailand's existing bolts have experienced grossly accelerated metal fatigue and oxidation, leading to unsafe climbing conditions and a substantial increase in the risk associated with climbing many of the popular routes." Bolts were already failing in droves when I was in Krabi in '93 - it's got to be a total crapshoot now if they haven't been doing titanium replacements for the past decade at the very least. Quote
Fromage Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I'd totally go to this conference if I wasn't already registered for the Annual Proceedings of the Spectre Preservation Society that weekend. I'm presenting a paper on the cost-benefit analysis of stopping to place drive-in protection on lead vs. just running it out. The panel I'm on is also featuring a discussion on the theme of "My Tools Are My Belay". Quote
