dberdinka Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Heading over to Mazama for a four day family reunion. Want to take the kids climbing at Fun Rocks. How is it? Any recommended routes/rocks/obscure slabs for top roping 4-8 year old kids on their first outdoor outing? Thanks! Quote
genepires Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 far right side of fun rocks (out in the sun) is sunbug slabs. easy 5.4 and similar. 2 or 3 easy routes side by side. big handholds and low angle. good kid fun. I have heard from a guide that there is a good beginners slab farther up on another crag that is good too but I have not been there. Quote
matt_warfield Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 (edited) Call or go to North Cascades Mountain Guides in Mazama and get the straight scoop. They know the area very well. Edited October 2, 2012 by matt_warfield Quote
dberdinka Posted October 9, 2012 Author Posted October 9, 2012 To answer my own question. Continue up the trail past Sunbug Slab for 2-3 minutes following signs to the "A-Wall". 30'-40' slab with several anchors on top. Perfect place to top rope with small children. Quote
fredrogers Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Darin- There are 3 separate anchors up there- they are great for the kids of that age. They are regularly cleaned for loose rock- but will be a little dirty most likely. They will be in the shade in the AM and it's been freezing at night, so no need for an alpine start. Also- having had a near miss there once, note the top of the "Sun Rock" slab is just up and right from the zone so keep an eye kids in that vicinity. Quote
