thelawgoddess Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 wtf? j/k. a gym climbing partner of mine was telling me there is some short ice climbs at big four. more info (where, when, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Highlander Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Do a search, it has been discussed here multiple times. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 It's at the bottom of the mountain. The walk is about one mile or so. Mostly bouldering. Quote
thelawgoddess Posted November 7, 2002 Author Posted November 7, 2002 i found lambone's thread started (oddly enough) exactly one year ago! i know basically *where* it is; just wondering where "the" spots to go are (if there are any in particular) ... and particularly from anyone who's been there recently. just looking for somewhere to tool around. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 The spot to go is the base of the mountain. If there was more to offer I would have mentioned it. Quote
Lambone Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Hey TLG, I was wondering the same thing last year...just go there, follow the tourist trail to the ice at the base of the large rock wall. It's obvious. Beware of avalanch hazard from the face, and calving ice. It's fun, an easy place to set up topropes and practice swinging tools. And alot closer than the Coleman. The steep shit is way hard! Quote
Lambone Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 Last night a friend told me that the main cave did not form up this season... Anybody been out there? How could that enoumous cave that was there last year, not be there this year, I thought it was allways there... Quote
ScottP Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 My guess is that when he says "form up", he is referring to the melting out that occurs to cause the caves to form. With enough snowfall, there might not be enough melting for the caves to form. I have been out there at the end of summer in heavy snow years and found only crawl spaces where caves have been previously. Quote
Lambone Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 Yeah, that is what he meant by "form up." Thats incredible...last year at this time the cave was large enough to drive a few city busses into. I might just havta go check it out on monday... Quote
thelawgoddess Posted November 8, 2002 Author Posted November 8, 2002 lambone, if i don't skip town and the bulk of humanity for an extended weekend, i'd be up for exploring the caves (or lake thereof) with you. i'm cursed with always having mondays off ... Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 There is no curse with having mondays off. I'd like to avoid more people out there. You should see if all the local rain might produce a flow if it seems cold enough up and right from the base of the NF. I'm sure it's been climbed in the 70s but it could be good.... Quote
Lambone Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 UW is closed monday, some kind of holiday or something I'd love to climb with other folks out at Big Four, but I got to make it back in time for the aid class at VW. Quote
