Buckshot Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Looking to swim/climb in the Banks Lake Area. Anything up to 5.10. Anyone have any ideas for some good spots? I have a boat with only an electric motor so I have limited lake travel ability. Quote
Off_White Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Much of the stuff over the water is not steep enough to be great DWS material, tumbling down a slab doesn't make hitting the water all that fun. You can probably find some stuff in the series of islands near Highway Rock. There's a boat launch nearby. Whitelaw's "Weekend Rock" covers a lot of the water access routes, there are two other guides which cover the land based stuff, though a feud between the two different authors lead to limited information sharing and great name confusion. Buckshot Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 I appreciate the feedback, at the worse we'll have a good day of swimming. Quote
Jens Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 (edited) I was going to throw a deep water solo party earlier in the month but my plans fell through. Edited July 11, 2012 by Jens Quote
Buckshot Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 Looks like we will either be at Billy Clapp (sounds like a disease I know) or Deep Lake. Quote
Off_White Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 You're gonna have to push off pretty hard if you want to hit the water! I like that TR the first time around, thanks for the bump. Orange Wall looks great. Quote
dom Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I was just out there over the weekend. There's a few pretty fun low-commitment deep water solo's that are easily accessible. As mentioned above the Weekend Rock guide has the best beta. I wrote a little summary here http://climb8a.blogspot.com/2012/07/deep-water-soloing-at-banks-lake.html dom Quote
Buckshot Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 (edited) I wish I had heard from you earlier but next time I will try that area. I actually chose to climb at Billy Clapp lake that weekend. We did a few 20-ish foot climbs from the waterline to cliffs that are popular cliff jumping spots. I don't have any pictures but the routes we climbed were just out of sight North of the boat launch at the South end. We estimated their grades (I am in no way qualified to rate a climb) to be between 5.6-5.8, fun enough that the kids (ages 13, 11 and 8) could climb easily with life jackets on. I second the notion that the scary part is the jump down, but totally worth it. We named the three routes re FAd Chossy With a Chance of Thunder (5.6?) Tofu Killer's Revenge (5.8) and another similar climb that I can't remember what we named. As the name implies we tossed off A LOT of loose rocks during the climbing.
