Hello all,

So I have some friends coming up from California this weekend, and they want to try to climb Rainier, the original plan was the Emmons, but based on what I am hearing/what the weather is doing, the emmons is not really in good shape right now.

Conveniently, I put together a route plan for the ingraham flats from my foray up there in april, but it dawned on me that it may not be in good shape either...

Has anyone been up there recently?

Is the ingraham passable? Or should I suck it up and make a new route plan for the DC?

thanks!

IMHO coming down from Schurman is easier than from Muir when it is pissing about. Just get on the Inter-Glacier and slide down to the creek and follow it out. Also given the predicted winds once down by the creek one is more sheltered. It is much faster drive back to Seattle and beer.

A good route plan for this weekend would be to drive east on Highway 2, turn right on Icicle Creek Canyon Rd, enjoy some cragging in the sun and do a repeat ascent of the bar stools in Gustav's.

Having been on Rainier a bunch of times in lousy conditions I don't feel a need to seek that out anymore, but that may just be me. Old, cantankerous, and selective. Ten years ago I thought it was fun to suffer on volcanoes in crummy weather. That's also part of the luxury of living here, it doesn't matter if the weather sucks this weekend because you can always go next weekend if it's better. Not so much when you are visiting from out of state.

Fromage, I am right there with you, I live here, and I am just trying to be a gracious host... That being said, I may have lucked out, looks like they are cancelling their flights and coming back later in the summer!

Warm rock here I come!

Ha. Us cantankerous and selective old farts from out of state and some youngsters (like Frieh who has it dialed) know how to plan visits to avoid the crummy weather. Two weeks ago, I flex into PDX on Thursday afternoon (got the ticket 2 days before), banged out two respectable routes on Hood in two days and was home Sunday morning into time to have breakfast with my wife :). Would have done Rainier but did not have enough time.
