wsj3
I'm in Portland and looking for a recommendation of where to practice using crampons, ice-axe for self arrest/glissade etc. Any suggestions of a good place to start practicing before climbing? G-spotter
somewhere with steep snow and a good runout
joshzielinski
for glissades and self arrests try s.side hood before breakfast. get on those monster jumps that 10 yr. olds huck 50'+ airs off of. as for crampons... you'll have wear them while mowing the lawn unless you want to go pretty high up cause it appears things have warmed up for the time being. kurthicks
Head up to the Eliot Glacier on the north side of Mt. Hood, by the Cooper Spur ski area. find some low angle ice to crampon on, then go up on the hillside to climber's left of the glacier to do some self-arrest.
