mzvarner Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Im thinking of taking one last trip for the season this weekend. My goals are The fat one, Chript orchid, G2, maybe upper green sleeves...Any one know how conditions are. I checked the Mt alpine site but there is not much on there except reports of dribbles being a little nasty. Quote
John Frieh Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Those should all be huge but if you want call Northern Lights and ask to talk to someone regarding ice conditions in the canyon. Quote
jdj Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 HL is fat and so are the climbs you mention. Keep in mind the road closes at the end of March. Quote
John Frieh Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Hmm why does the road close? The road will be closed to motorized use from April 1-May 15 while the Forest Service clears the road of fallen debris. Break-up generally occurs with the onset of spring and the thawing of the canyon. According to the Gallatin National Forest, “The road sub-grade thaws and gets saturated to the point that it can’t support the road bed and the large amount of vehicle traffic that uses it. Impacts to the road surface including surface cracking and potholes, are highly likely when motorized use occurs during spring thaw.” While the Forest Service restricts motorized use during spring break-up, it encourages hikers and bikers to use the road to explore Hyalite Canyon. Visitors should be aware that obstacles on the roadway may be present and that work crews will be using the road. Quote
mzvarner Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 Thanks, but trip has been cancelled now. Just had a HUGE test thrown at me in A&P and I cant afford to take three days off now. Quote
