jgregory Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 We rented locators, going to go up even earlier now and play it by ear. Quote
kinnikinnick Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 (edited) ...by "locators" do you mean a GPS personal locator device? An avalanche beacon and the requisite snow evaluation skills are a much better choice. Edited April 29, 2011 by kinnikinnick Quote
devan Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 I really hope you mean avalanche beacons, a probe, and a shovel. All a gps system will do will find you dead body. Quote
jgregory Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Yes sorry, bca beacons. Going to go up and dig some pits. I agree with parkerm, it's looking like no sumitting. Quote
devan Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Im going to go check out Mt Hoods south route early morning Sunday. Ill do some pits and my gut and see what the verdict is for a summit bid. Good luck and enjoy the digging. I hope you get a chance. Looks like clear skies Sunday. Quote
dhrmabum Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Didn't mean to rain the avy news on your parade--seemed worth posting giving you asked about conditions since NWAC stopped regular reports. I do think they'll put another update tomorrow. I've felt this winter and spring has really sucked having generally safe avy conditions along with weather windows greater than 24hr..let alone on weekends. maybe someone else can offer something up but I this is my take: ski: resort climb: rock  or do some hiking at lower elevations.  I thinK that's good advice. . . Macson Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Went up Saturday. About 40 people climbed, according to the register. Snow was soft, especially in the afternoon, we summited with snowshoes. If you stay on the regular route you avoid most of the avy terrain. We saw some shallow wet sloughs but not enough to make us turn around. Quote
gun_arrr Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 How is the car access right now? I'm assuming it's still Marble Mountain? Thanks for the updates. Quote
jgregory Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 It was a beautiful day up there. Drivable to Marble Mountain in a car. Â [img:left]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5064/5681362019_53d5362727_z.jpg[/img] Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Full-size pano here Quote
parkerm Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 It was a good day. Left camp at 6am and slogged it up to the top. We were the first to summit a little after 1pm, and you are all welcome for the steps Not that they held up in the warming snow. We switched snow shoes for crampons at about 6500' but wish we hadnt. The route is fairly well protected and you can take ridges almost the whole way. We only saw some cornices tumble off, nothing else as far as slides. Quote
snakebreak Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 I am wondering if anyone went up last weekend (5/14-15)? What are the access conditions, etc. Thanks. Quote
pioneerian Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 The road is open to the Marble Mt Trailhead for any type of vehicle. Went up Monday and had about 100 yards max visibility the whole time. Didn't need crampons and it would have sucked without snowshoes. Glisading wasn't great either but nonetheless still a great time on Helens. Quote
snakebreak Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 We went up on the 22nd. Snowshoes all the way. Without snowshoes it would have been hard. Snow at the parking lot. Lots of slush on the way down. Â Quote
Frontpointing Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 (edited) Anyone planning on heading down this weekend? Â I'm interested to know what the conditions are shaping up like as the weather is looking pretty bomber. Â Avy conditions? I've only approached via climbers bivouac, so am unfamiliar with the other routes. How long has it been taking folks from the cars? Edited June 3, 2011 by Frontpointing Quote
