Woodcutter Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Looking for a lightweight boot to climb mixed routes & day ice - W3 maybe W4 Is the sole stiff enough on the Trango S Evo (the red one). If not, any recommendations - I have big 3lb winter boots already. Thanks Quote
genepires Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 what are the winter boots you own? I doubt the s evo is stiff enough but maybe you cannonball calves? Quote
Woodcutter Posted October 14, 2010 Author Posted October 14, 2010 Boreal Kangris. They are a little heavy to be trying to climb technical mixed (1400g each boot) and you really know when you've spent a couple of days in the cascades. I like the look of the stiff Evo Superlights but was really trying to find something that might still climb alpine rock in the summer too. Tall order I know. Any thoughts appreciated. Quote
davidk Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 The Trango Evo S will end up feeling too soft, and when you tighten the binding on your hybrid Sabretooths to prevent them from slipping on harder ice and mixed, the toe cap on your boots might collapse. This is uncomfortable and cold. I started ice climbing in Scarpa Charmoz boots (equivalent to the Trango S), and they worked, but after climbing in a rigid, insulated ice boot (Scarpa Phantom Light), the difference is clear. From the Sportiva line, the Trango Prime, Trango Extreme, or Batura Evo are much more suited to ice and mixed. Quote
Woodcutter Posted October 15, 2010 Author Posted October 15, 2010 Thanks. Gonna try some boots on & hope la nina gets frosty sometime soon. Quote
