jshamster Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Looks like good news up north, eh. http://www.squamishchief.com/article/20100924/SQUAMISH0101/309249943/-1/SQUAMISH/malamute-bluff-now-protected Doesn't look to open lower malamute, but i'm not sure. Quote
gearheart Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Yes, fantastic news for the upper malamute, but no change regarding the closure of the lower malamute. Todd Squamish Access Society Quote
gertlush Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Wtf? That is log it & flog it at its best. I like this quote: In March 2007, recreational users were angered when Malamute Holdings principals Steve Miles and Paul Turner – also of CRB Logging – removed nearly 1,500 trees from the site, leaving noticeable scarring. The work was in contravention of the District of Squamish tree removal bylaw and carried a possible penalty of between $1,000 and $10,000 per tree, meaning the company could be liable for anywhere from $1,413,000 to $14,130,000. “Three and a half years ago, it became clear to us that this land had a different importance to a lot of people,” said Miles at the handover ceremony today Haha right after they logged it they found out it was important to people. Shit they would've been glad to offload the land once they took the trees. To my knowledge they never did get fined...and now they got a parcel of land worth $1.25 mil somewhere else. And there was never any problems with access at upper malamute anyway. Quote
jmace Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 And there was never any problems with access at upper malamute anyway. yup and are the climbs at upper malemute really all that good? I go back once every 5 years and the same climbs are dirty and the same couple are busy... I wish the access society would do something like get us into skypilot and habrich. Quote
gearheart Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 I am certain we would love to have someone volunteer to put some time into the skypilot/habrich issue. If anyone wants to get involved in that or any other access issue, or provide feedback on any squamish area access issues, the Squamish Access Society annual general meeting is next Sunday Oct. 3 at 6pm in the garibaldi room at the brew pub. There will also be a couple of slide shows (Jeremy Smith and Colin Moorhead, theme may be new routes in the gullies of the chief) and various ropes and other gear to be won as door prizes. Jaredvg Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 I am very happy that the Malamute has been acquired by the province. As Casinos and blindingly bright reader boards appear at the base of the Apron, it is nice to know that we can still escape the highway noise and rope up looking over Howe Sound into the future. A sincere thank you to all involved in this acquisition! Quote
wayne Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 The new route and retro route cleaners are going crazy at Squamish! We hung out with a few of them. Squamish is getting cleaner by the day! Upper could get a make over soon. Lower is seeing much traffic anyways. Here is my recent tr Wordpress Quote
skykilo Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 That's great. I just climbed on the Malamute for my first time last week. Incredible! Quote
