KaskadskyjKozak Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 (edited) Trip: South Early Winters Spire - South Arete Date: 10/10/2009 Trip Report: I haven't been out in a while so I thought I'd try something easy this weekend. SEWS seemed like a good option. We car camped at the Blue Lake TH on Friday. It was colder than a witch's tit. I woke up a couple of times shivering in my 15 degree bag in the middle of the night. It must have been at least the low 20's. We got up before dawn, and hike the easy approach making it to the base of the route in about 90 minutes. It was beautiful out! Unfortunately we broke a good sweat and by the time we geared up, our fingers were numb. Everyone opted to keep on their boots for warmth, and wear a couple of layers of clothing, gloves, and climb with packs. This is what it's all about! The crux move was hard as hell with the pack, boots, and numb fingers. Eventually we warmed up and the outing became more and more enjoyable. One other party (of 2) followed us up. Other than them, we had the peak to ourselves. I can't say the same about the hike out - the trail was PACKED. Looking down from the top of pitch two: The whale's back from above: Summit porn: Hike out: Gear Notes: Small alpine rack. Warm clothes. Approach Notes: Cold temps. Very little snow. Larches turning. Le Piston Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 I love this climb in the Fall. Thanks for the conditions update and TR. Nice to know someone was out enjoying the hills while I worked...DAMN! Quote
olyclimber Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 thanks. pics can be fixed by ensuring that the url points to the actual image, instead of the webpage where the image is found...i.e. the url will end with ".jpg" or whatever format you've got. Quote

matt_warfield Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 I always heard it was that the phrase was as cold as a witches tit in a brass bra. But a great TR and it's always good to get out. Quote
KaskadskyjKozak Posted October 12, 2009 Author Posted October 12, 2009 Nice. Did you hit fresh snow? I believe the patches of snow had been there since the previous Friday or so. By no means contiguous (pretty sparse, actually) Quote
