Ice climbing outside of Camp Muir?

got a buddy coming in from MI who wants to give Rainier hell...made our reservations at the beginning of the season for 3 days so he'd have some snow skills practice blah blah blah...

 

with the extra time thinking of lugging up the picks if there was an easily accessable area outside of Muir to do some ice climbing off serac/crevasse walls

 

anybody up there recently who could comment?

There might be some crevasses you could lower into on the Cowlitz.

You could always spend a day down low and hit the lower Nisqually Glacier... fun stuff.

David Gottlieb or one of the other climbing rangers might also have some spots to recommend if you give them a call.

FYI...few good ones just below Muir (15 min jaunt) to drop into...most with good ledges or floors to start from...no ramp entries however
