jpark42 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Looking to climbing in Porto Chico end of March and early April but I am a little concerned about the violence that has been happening. Anyone have any beta on the treat in the area, if any at all. Quote
canadug Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I have been in the Yucatan region for the past 10 days and all is quite sweet. If you listen to the typical US media you would believe all of Mexico is a slaughter house. Most of the drug violence is along the US/Mexico border. Quote
matt_m Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 While in San Antonio last year, most Austin-ites were pretty upbeat on the scene there. (I never made it down due to conflicts every weekend I had the chance!) There were concerns last year as well. No military personnel were allowed in Mexico PERIOD. The vibe I got was once you're there it's a pretty sleepy climbers area - you are not in town but up canyon near the rocks. People did insist on only driving there during the daylight hours and avoiding any time in the border towns. It does seem to be getting worse. http://www.woai.com/news/local/story/Mexico-morgues-crowded-with-mounting-drug-war-dead/LSnkl95et0mJGLfvvuD1Kg.cspx http://www.woai.com/mostpopular/story/Spring-break-travel-warning/wjGlfP29nEa85D78hBE1tg.cspx This is the best place to get the "local" info. http://www.erockonline.com/forum/upload/index.php Quote

Anyone have any beta on the treat in the area, if any at all. I'm assuming you mean El Potrero Chico. The drug war seems to be confined closer to the borders and in the bigger cities. My friends in Hidalgo insist they've seen nothing of the violence shown on the TV in town or in Monterrey. Late March may be a little warm - good luck! Quote
