Jarred_Jackman Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 What's the story with the tunnels at Beacon? Why were they built? How long are they? Why so many? Just curious. Thanks! Quote
denalidave Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 I've heard they were blasted as a mining project but that's about all I've heard. Not sure what they were planning on mining though. Bet Joseph knows a bit about the subject. Quote
kevbone Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 The tunnels were drilled because back in the day they had plans to blow the shit out of Beacon Rock. Quote
catbirdseat Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 According to Wikipedia: "The United States Army Corps of Engineers planned to destroy the rock for a jetty at the mouth of the Columbia, and dug three caves on the rock's south side. During this time, Biddle's family tried to make it a state park. At first Washington refused the gift, but changed when Oregon offered to accept." That would have been a travesty of monumental proportions. Quote
ivan Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 the "arena of terror" on the far southwest side shown below was perhaps the result of one previous tunnel being blasted? it certainly is shaped like a big crater. they may also be the entrances to the secret rebel base or the freaking laser Quote
ivan Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 That would have been a travesty of monumental proportions. kinda like making a king-sized thick ass feather bed out of a whole squadron of bald eagles? actually, that'd be a whole lot more worth it! Quote

denalidave Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Well there you have it. We should start blasting away all those ugly monoliths out there. Maybe we can start in the valley? Quote
