Have never climbed Mt Hood, and don't see any recent trip reports. Any compelling reasons not to climb the south route in late September or early October? Go climb something else on the list and come back to it... I agree. It's a great winter climb. I've done it twice in winter and had fun both times. Jay Chute Posted September 10, 2008 Share Posted September 10, 2008 I had a very dangerous experience sunday morning on the easiest climb on the mountain. I fell chest deep into a hidden crevasse with my legs dangling into open space. The hidden bergshrund is on the south climb on the upper old chute to the left of the hogsback and pearlygates. I wouldnt suggest going this time of year. There is a TON of very dangerous rock fall right now. Its not even worth it. Wait for more snow. May through July is a great time to go. ropegoat Posted September 11, 2008 Share Posted September 11, 2008 I was up on the hill with Jay, and while we did have a scary, rockfall strewn experience, it was a unique thing to do and I got a lot of value out of it. That said, it's about the worst time I can think of to go- at least wait for it to be "very early season" (ie. November), rather than "very late season".
