petah Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Hello. Moving from Minnesota to Reno in a few weeks. I know that the Tahoe area has some rock to play on, but are there any areas for ice climbing around Reno/Tahoe? Any info/links about ice and rock areas appreciated. P. Quote
mkporwit Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Your closest ice is probably Lee Vining and June Lake, a couple of hours south on 395. Quote
mkporwit Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Or if you want alpine ice, there's nice couloirs on the east side of the Sierra that come into shape right about now... North Peak and Mt. Dana are probably the closest to you, but there's more as you go south. Quote
matt_warfield Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 For alpine rock, the Sierras are close with infinite opportunity. For rock, 200 mi. south is Bishop, with world class bouldering and cragging. I'm sure there are other areas closer to Reno as well (e.g. Donner Summit) but I'm not that familiar with them. Quote
texplorer Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Around Tahoe you are correct. The climbing at Lover's leap, phantom spires, and sugarloaf is pretty prime. Donner Summit is about an hour up the pass toward Sacramento for single pitch stuff. I just moved to Reno and though am pretty busy am looking forward to hitting the Sierras. I've been looking for partners to get on some the classic Sierra routes and perhaps scope out some new lines there too. When you get here look me up. Quote
kurthicks Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 there is also some occasional ice around Tahoe. Look in the Emerald Bay area for starters. Quote
