murraysovereign Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Odds of this happening again? How come it's dated July 5? Did Dan Rather write it? Quote
sobo Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 He was under a lot of stress when he wrote that, cuz Ike (nor anyone else for that matter) couldn't have known the outcome of the invasion of Normandy yet, on June 5. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 Not sure why he picked July to predate the failure message. Note he changed "the troops have been withdrawn" to "I have withdrawn the troops" http://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/d-day-message/ Quote
sobo Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 I really think it was because of stress. He wrote that note a few days before the operation began. He knew it was June. Can you imagine the weight he must have been feeling? Wow. I think changing from a non-possessive "the troops have been withdrawn" to the possessive form of the action, "I have withdrawn the troops", says a lot about where he was making sure the blame was going to fall if the operation went down the toilet. You gotta commend the man. Quote

builder206 Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 He means "I's has withdrawn the troops," duh. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 You gotta commend the man. Yup. His choices. His responsibility, they fulfilled to their utmost. Quote
Fairweather Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 ...and you, Nobrain13, and Proly would have been right here whining about those poor German boys who just wanted to lay down their rifles...and all the collateral damage done to the magnificent French countryside. No doubt our naval shelling and use of flamethrowers would have raised howls of blood on our hands from the likes of you, and Prole would be questioning the motivation of our soldiers doing the bidding of evil multinational corporations like Ford. The summary executions of German POW's with empty magazines would have you, no doubt, renouncing your US citizenship. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 if Iraq had declared war on us you'd have a point Quote
