pink Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 (edited) so if i go on a long walk through the woods and climb a multi-pitch climb, would this be alpine climbing? how far away does it have to be from a road and does rock quality have anything to do it for it to be called alpine. what is alpine climbing? pink Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 so alpine is just another word for climbing easy shit after a long hike, it sounds so bad ass. why not just call it climbing? Quote
Bug Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I just did a search on "Pink" and all that comes up is spray. I beleive Feck coined the term "God Boy". It seems more appropriate. Especially on this thread. Which was done less than a year ago. Quote

I couldn't find it. I entered "Alpine" and came up with 12 pages. Anyway, I was just poking you in the eye because you usually come back with something colorful. Now I feel bad for hurting your feelings. So hear is my stab. Were you wet sometimes? Did you have to bushwhack to get to the base? Were you eventually higher than most of the terrain you could see? Did some of the holds fall off and nearly hit you or your partner? Did you carry a pack? Did you wish you had brought an ice ax? Did you have to bivy? http://www.traditionalmountaineering.org/Sport.htm Quote
pink Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 thanks, i was trying to keep this from turning into spray. the troll comment was to get all you yahoos interested. so would climbing the n ridge of stuart car to car be considered alpine climbing? Quote
ivan Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 alpine = multi-pitch w/ a view of something w/ snow on it Quote
pink Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 do you have to touch the snow or can i just look at it Quote
Hendershot Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 so would climbing the n ridge of stuart car to car be considered alpine climbing? I would consider it alpine climbing. I think the determination of alpine vs. crag boils down to the roman numeral grade, the level of commitment required. Quote
Hendershot Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 If you use one of these, then you are a boulderer posing as a sport climber. Quote
pink Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 if i hiked up to half dome and climbed the nw west face would you call it alpine big wall climbing then, or would you just call it climbing half dome? Quote
pink Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 If you use one of these, then you are a boulderer posing as a sport climber. i use a figure 8 still, is that alpine? Quote
pink Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 so alpine means no belay devices, hip belays and or running belays. that is badass Quote
Hendershot Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 You can still rappel off a figure 8, you can't with this new ATC sport. Quote
Bug Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Alpine means climbing a peak using ropes and gear. Some would say that a hike up a peak is alpine. Some would say that climbing at Index in bad weather is alpine. Both would be a stretch. Alpine is upper elevations (realative term). After climbing Champagne on Snow Creek wall with AlpineFox, we also did the sawtooth ridge to get to the top of OuterSpace. AF referred to it as "having and alpine feel". There were loose sections, lichen, we were on top of a ridge, and we were roped in. We did not have pons, ax, bivy gear but those are often included in alpine climbing. Quote
