lancegranite Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Went down the GC with a bunch of folks last month, lots of fun! I learned to oar an 18 foot raft and did a little whitewater kayaking as well. We were 16 guys from Las Vegas, Yosemite, San Diego and Tahoe on a private permit. Rule 1. Bring more beer than you can possibly imagine. (we drank somewhere around 40 cases worth and ran out) Rule 2. Bring more of everything else too. Some highlights include a canyoneering descent of Deer creek canyon,( I drank beer and watched) slackline across the Colorado (not me, thanks) and did a fair bit of bouldering ( oh yeah!). We also managed a nice hand crack in the Havasu Creek area along with some easy soloing. I cannot express how freakin' amazing the canyon is... you float past 5-600 unclimbed big walls, hike amazing slot canyons and paddle 225 miles of amazingly powerful water. I cannot reccomend this trip enough!!! Quote
olyclimber Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Sounds like a blast Mr Granite...some day maybe I'll be so lucky. Quote
111 Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Yea, what else is there to do besides drink and get sunburnt. An emergency bottle of Jack should always be kept in the 1st aid kit in the horrific case that you drink everything else Quote
lancegranite Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 Link to the photobucket site I made for the trip. http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w2/grandcanyonriggers/ Braden bouldering in Nevell canyon as John Franklin waits for his turn. Quote
lancegranite Posted February 21, 2008 Author Posted February 21, 2008 Was digging through some of the pictures from this trip and thought I would ammend this TR with some GC pron. enjoy! The daily commute, this red limestone is the most common rock for the first 100 miles or so. Guidebook was later burned for unexplained reasons. Passing yet another unclimbed line, You pass around 200 miles of this stuff. Brian climbing some rock near Phantom Ranch. First fish of the trip, I had just ate shite in my kayak and got rescued by these guys, note the guy holding on to me. Redwall Cavern, nuff said. Kayaking is fun. Sweeny exiting Deer Creek Falls Peter bouldering during coffee break, day 5 Nevell Canyon, yes, those are sinker pockets. More Nevell canyon Slackline across Grand Canyon Lava: They pulled 2 bodies outta here the day before we launched. It's just you and God Quote
JayB Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Bummer about the fatalities in Lava. What did you hear? Last drowning recorded in the GC on AW is from 2004. Quote
lancegranite Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 We heard it at the put-in from the ranger. Wonder if he was just trying put us on. I never bothered to check up on the story, just got scared by it's implacations and then got into my boat and pushed off. Quote
