undermind Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 By the way, if anyone finds a single REI Switchback mitt, PM me!! It literally blew off of my hand in a ridiculous gust of wind. Took off like a Happy Gilmore tee shot.. Quote
Rat_In_Training Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 No, rode the lifts up at 10am. Started climbing from the top of palmer around 10:30. I packed my snowboard up to the base of crater rock. Topped out at the summit at 2:45. Popped down to my snowboard, and was back at the lodge at 4:05 pm. Nice, relatively quick (at least for me) climb. The weather was great. I forgot the sunscreen, got a real nice burn. Sory the weather turned to crap for you guys on Sunday, cause Saturday was great. Quote

Rat_In_Training Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 aaaah...so this was your first solo AID climb of Mt. Hood then. ha! i kid... I freely admit that I was smart enough to save myself from the never ending slog to the top of the palmer. Shame on me.... Quote
Rat_In_Training Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 It just doesn't happen very often that you can get away with starting late enough to ride the lift, and still make the summit before conditions get very bad..... Saturday seemed to work out perfect. The weather must have dumped right after I left.... Quote
111 Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 What time is a good start time for Hood to avoid rockfall and loosening snow? we are climbing it this weekend and I havent done it in spring ever. Quote
goatboy Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Depends on freezing levels/temps the night before, eh? Check conditions and get started well before the temps rise.... Also depends on your overall speed and fitness... Slower parties often start around 1 or 2 AM from the parking lot.... Quote

If you're strong and relatively fast, 3am. If your slower 1 or 2. And if you're REALLY slow, like I remember from all of the 20 member Mazama groups I was with, midnight. I don't miss those days. Take skis. It's the only way to go anymore. Quote
