Sunnyside_up Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 I'm looking to get myself a nicer jacket for this winter and don't know where to start. Let's say my criteria are: 1. warmth 2. windproof 3. waterproof 4. cost What's the best bang for the buck? Quote
olyclimber Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 I'd instead recommend you read what Jim Nelson has to say here: http://www.promountainsports.com/clothing.shtml and not go for a "all in one" jacket. Also, you otter buy whatever you get from him. Good stuff. Quote
Julian Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 The Beyond Fleece Cold Fusion jacket, available at www.beyondfleece.com -softshell (Schoeller WB-400) -warm fleece inner -windproof -almost waterproof (if you are active it typically dries out) -great price, much cheaper than the brand names for a full-featured jacket -custom fit so it will be the best-fitting jacket you've ever bought Quote
genepires Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 ditto as oly said. BTW, are you asking about softshells, belay parkas or goretex type jackets? 1. you will find that your outershell should not be considered in regards to warmth. if it keeps you dry, then it will help you stay warm. your outer wear should have no insulation unless it is a belay parka. 2. if it is waterproof, then it is windproof. windproof is more a function for softshells. 4. cost- you get what you pay for so expect to pay alot. patagonia had a big online sale. see if they still got jetstream jackets. slooper Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 i would recommend John Frieh's gear blowout in the yard sale. Quote
