I am sure many people have had their cars broken into at exit 38, but I thought I might add my experience so folks can look out for these jokers. We parked at the Far Side parking lot today and as we got out of the car two guys pulled up to the powerline tower and parked their white (late 90's model) two door car. It looked like some kind of poor-man's sports car. These guys were both white (one with dark hair and the other blond) and about 26 years old. Neither one of them was dressed for climbing, hiking, or swimming, but they followed my partner and I up to the bridge. As we cut off onto the trail on the other side these guys headed back to the parking lot. They looked very suspicious, and low and behold when we got back to the car my back window was busted out. They didn't touch any of the climbing gear so they are definately not climbers. So be on the lookout for two jokers in a white car hanging out in the area. And take everything with you!

Man, we should set up a sting. Have a party of four, head up, then bushwhack back to the cars and just wait, maybe with some ice tools, or a #6 Tricam...

We did make an immediate police report. I should also say that these guys were carrying a rather large knife with them at the time. I know this because they dropped it as they broke in the window.

The bi-montly suggestion surfaces again. Maybe starting a thread on this suggestion and looking for volunteers might help? Setting up a schedule for people to fill in? Something?

I went to Exit 38 today, and all I can say is "Come on people, use some common sense!!" Out of curiosity, I looked through the windows of the four cars parked next to me. This is what I saw with a quick glance.

Car 1: Two pairs of climbing shoes, a handfull of biners and some pro.

Car 2: A brand new sleeping bag, tons of paperwork, towels covering large "intersting" items, and a briefcase.

Car 3: More paperwork, more towels and clothing, and a new rope on the rear seat. Several helmets, and so much stuff in the car that who knows what treasures might be found.

Car 4: A cell phone and nice pair of sunglasses on the console.

Jeesh, one would think that with these breakins, people would not advertise "hit my car, I have lots of stuff in it!" Not that I mind though. When one looks into mine, they see two old starbucks cups and yesterdays newspaper. If we keep are cars clean so there is nothing to steal, the thieves will move on to better targets.

My understanding is that in virtually all of the E-38 break-ins, no climbing gear has been stolen. They are after credit cards. Did you see any wallets?

I didn't see any wallets, but with so much stuff in the cars, its not hard to presume there could be wallets, credit card statements, bank statements or checkbooks inside. If someone is willing to leave a cell phone in plain sight, is it too hard to imagine his wallet might be in the glove box?
