powderhound Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 I am headed out with the family to prinville in a couple of weeks and I am wondering if anyone knows a particular spot where there is an area where the rock is of fair enough quality to do some soloing. Any info would awsome. Quote
Jim Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Over a two year period I did bird, reptile, and plant surveys around the area including some boat surveys. There's no cliff faces that come directly to the water's edge and most of the stuff around the reservoir is tuff that is more crumbly than Smithy. There's some cool looking basalt cliffs in the Crooked River canyon so you might find some bouldering there, but nothing comes to mind immediately. Decent fly fishing in the Crooked River here from the cold water releases from the dam. Quote
powderhound Posted June 16, 2006 Author Posted June 16, 2006 Are you sure because I have seen some photos of people doing it, just not sure where, and I would rather not spend all day driving the boat around look for solid rock. I know that there are a bunch of cliffs that go straight into the water. So... Quote
Jim Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 And we're talking about Prineville Reservoir, the Bureau of Reclamation Reservoir close to Prineville, not the huge Lake Billy Chinook, which is closer to Madras? If so I honestly can't think of a place where the cliffs come straight down to any deep water. Maybe there are some routes on Chimmney Rock near the park entrance, but it really didn't look to inviting to me and it is a crumbly tuff with a talus landing. Sorry I can't be of more help. Quote
billcoe Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Bryan, i've done some scrambing around over there in between water skiing, and although nothing is top notch, you can find places to stretch out a bit. I don't remember finding a place you could drop into the water either. Might consider finding a partner and doing the piller out that way. You could free it, I think there's a couple of 10 pitches on the 1 route, like 10a to start, a traverse thing and then 10d but it's been years. Almost forgot the name of it. Steins pillar. Yup, I understand that theres been some new routes on it since I've been there like 15 years ago. Do a search on this site, might be able to just head over there and find someone to hook up with on the spot, it's worth doing IMO, but I've only done 1 route on it and theres more than that. Quote
