Climb: Exit 38-Far Side, Off-Ramp (4 routes)

Date of Climb: 4/19/2006

Trip Report:

Alex, Rad, KJK, Weekend_Climberz, Jimbabwe, Roboboy, AMS, Toast and Scott all carpooled up to the Exit 38 from the Issaquah Park and Ride. Some of us climbed at Interstate Park and some checked out a new subsection below the route Ellie's Sweet Kiss called Off-Ramp.

Off-Ramp is reached using a faint trail that starts below Space Face. There are four routes on steep, rock with excellent texture. From left to right they go 5.9, 5.10-, 5.9 and 5.8. The best one in my opinion was the third one, but they were all remarkably good.

We had just arrived at the base of the routes and because there is a trail just above the wall, we decided it was prudent to put on helmets immediately. No sooner had I put my helmet on when I heard, "ROCK!", yelled from above. It sounded like Alex's voice. I turned to my right to see a rock the size of a football tumbling down the slope near the trail. Right behind it is what looks like a pack. The rock stopped, but the pack continued down slope a ways until if finally fetched up against some bushes.

I walked over to see if anyone had fallen and I see Alex heading down the trail. He says, "are you guy's okay?" I replied yes, but he disappears. I can't figure out where he's gone. Finally he approaches from the opposite direction and we get the story of how they set a rope bag on a slope. It started rolling and they thought it would stop. It almost did, but kept on going and it dislodged the rock.

Gear Notes:

Set of draws.
