Squid Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Anyone aware of any climbing down along the Owyhee? Quote
chrisn Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 I found this while poking around on-line. http://www.boiseclimbs.com/i84west_area.htm I've never been before but I've got six weeks in the field close by this summer. I'm looking forward to checking the area out. Quote
Johnny_Tuff Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 Googling around, it looks like there's acres of unexplored tuff out that way. Although, it's probably all so much choss, but some of it looked pretty cool. Quote
ChrisG Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 I floated/backpacked from three forks to rome several years ago. I didnt see anything developed. There was a lot of steep rock overhanging semi-deep portions of river, lots of bird shit too. If I did it again I'd probably bring along some rock shoes. Â The terrain flattens out a couple miles before Rome and I think it stays flat for a while. Â That was great country and isolated, we didnt see any other parties for 4-5 days. Â Im not sure I can post these correctly: Â Quote
AFIVE Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Thanks. I got an email address to ask about the Conner Columns. Quote
Camilo Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Here are ChrisG's pics. I'll probably be down there in a couple of weeks for a weekend of rafting, I'll take pics and report on any climbing to be done. It's a long ways getting there from Portland, 8 hours or more. Quote
Squid Posted April 18, 2006 Author Posted April 18, 2006 Nice, ChrisN and Camilo! Â Like you, I'm hoping to go boating down there this spring, was planning on bring my rack'n'shoes. Â Sometimes that columnar basalt is great, sometimes it's choss. Quote
Camilo Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 I don't paddle. . . I need another hobby to suck at like I need a bullet in the head. We're going May 2. In rafts. If you come with paddlers at the same time, I'm sure we could throw some of your gear in our boats. Quote
ChrisG Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 I let me Dad talk me into going in September. My buddy and I spent 75% of the time pulling a 2 man raft with 4 backpacks down a river 6 inches deep. Â Every time we hit the swift stuff we had to be damn careful not to soak everyone's gear. Â I found his old trip report: TR Quote
Squid Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 Yeah- this river is mostly snowmelt, so run it early in the season. Otherwise it sounds like a long damp walk. Quote
Camilo Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I just talked to my dad. River is running at 8500cfs. It's runnable from 1000-5000cfs. We're pushing the trip back to start May 9th, which might still be too early. . . and I'll miss the ski-in Quote
